Secret tunnels under Manchester

POD, in the first pic you can see the toilets, in the second picture road works cover that area so they must have been sealing them at that time.
That was my first thought but if you study the other pictures you'll see that the toilets would be out of frame in the image with the roadworks.I am guessing that the roadworks are the tip of the iceberg, and that out of the image you would have seen the toilet entrances being removed.
And I thought I'd come back to a thread full of stuff about the tunnels....
Anyway, I've been for a little trip into Manchester, well about a 20 mile round trip actually but it was a nice day and I haven't used the bike much lately because of the rain.
I've got a gazillion pictures to post up, but I think I can make an educated guess as to how they got into the landing stages. Give me 20 minutes or so and all will be explained (bear in mind its a best-guess but I think its a good one).

Some better images of the area, including a fookoff massive panorama that allows you to see all the holes, doors, pigeons, etc.

Ok this is my theory as to how they may have gotten in
In front of the Cathedral, on Victoria Street, there are a good 20-30 access points for various underground bits and pieces. Drain covers, grids, electricity, communications, gas, etc.
Now without fail every single one of these covers has two rubber seals on the edges. What exactly they are I don't know, but they're probably a tamper-proof device to make people aware that someone has been messing with the cover, vandals etc (NOT THE 28DL EXPLORERS - THEY'RE NOT VANDALS IMO). They're like bicycle puncture repair patches, except bigger.
Every single one except two.
Now it just so happens that these two are right above the landing stages - I mean right on top. I checked every other grid/hole in the area, every single one had untouched seals, grime around the edges, and dirty keyholes. All but these two, which showed clear signs of tampering.
Again its just a theory but I find it odd that the only two covers in the area that show evidence of tampering are those immediately above the landing stages. And theres no grime around the edges, and the keyholes had small scratches on (not dull).
The two covers with the damaged seals are Cable & Wireless access, the smaller one looks as though its just been lifted from one side, and not removed.

Thats why I made it obvious it was a theory - I don't know much about what lies under grids and things, but its obvious that they've been tampered with.
Perhaps in the course of their investigations, they lifted these to see what was what.
I did look at all the grids in the area, they were brim full of litter and all kinds of cack. All the other covers were still sealed, there were one or two suspicious looking things near the Cathedral, boarded up and screwed down cellar windows for instance.

I know of some truly insane places that I'm sure 28DL would love to know about or see pics of....
But I'm just going to share them with PHers I think.
On my way back I passed over a little-used large road bridge. On the side of the bridge were derelict properties built into another bridge, and these properties extend quite a way into the bridge supports. Quite probably they were used as loading bays. But I'm just going to share them with PHers I think.
They're fenced off and look a bit tricky to get into.
I bet the 28DL lot haven't seen those. Should I post the pictures, and mention where they are?
I'd quite like to know if the 28DL lot have been in here:
Its not far away from the Cathedral Steps. Not far at all. Its even closer to the entrance of the Manchester and Salford Junction Canal.
Its fenced off, but doesn't seem that hard to get into. I wonder what could be in there.....that grille under the bridge looks mighty inviting.....

sjn look at the wall at street level in the photograph, its noticeably cheap and nasty when you compare it to the modern railings, and the railings on Cathedral Approach (the bridge to the station, originally the entire wall would have had the same railings). - thats where the structure you're talking about was. If you look back through the thread you'll see it, its a big shelter with somethink like "THO & SON" written on the top.
Oh and how dare you ask me where that bridge is, your comments will be deleted and your account terminated.

In a way I have to thank that lot. Their reaction prompted me into creating an article on Wikipedia about the tunnels, just to piss them off. Its a pretty poor article but it didn't half annoy them to see their little 'secret' revealed to an interested public.
Article-writing on Wikipedia, for me, is now a full-time hobby. My latest:

Nice one. I have contributed to some Wikis (i.e. the one on Sir Francis Drake) and had some bd delete my contributions (which were perfectly valid ones) which peed me off a bit.Article-writing on Wikipedia, for me, is now a full-time hobby. My latest:

Manchester Cathedral Steps.
Its pretty old though, and not particularly great, certainly not by the standards I'm writing to now (see significant contributions on the right of this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Parrot_of_Doom )
