Greatest Living Englishman
Discussion
At the moment I'm voting for Macca.
I've only recently come to this view point, and whilst I've long been a fan of The Beatles I've never for a moment considered I'd even want to be a fan of McCartney.
But for some reason, just recently I've been having a bit of a love-fest for The Beatles, and I think my view has changed due to a combination of seeing and appreciating just how vast the amount of 'stuff' there is out there on line about the Fab Four and Macca, and the fact that at the grand old age of 56 I can now judge from a perspective of looking back and comparing with all the other music I've enjoyed over the past 50 years.
I have indeed enjoyed and do still enjoy listening to a lot of music, but I'm finding that imo the cultural impact of Beatles and Macca has stood the test of time for me, and while other great albums and bands tend to drift into memory,I'm finding that I'm enjoying Beatles and Macca now possibly more than I have done before, and am very much enjoying appreciating them from a more mature viewpoint..
On the other thread the OP dismisses McCartney as just an entertainer, but that doesn't explain the very high degree of appreciation there is out there for him - it's vast, and I've just had an enjoyable lunchtime finding more stuff that I had'nt seen before.

I do agree though that there have been howlers along the way, and I'm not at all familiar with Macca's recent stuff, but I notice that he is still receiving critical acclaim so I can only look forward to getting to know it.

There is a thread running about Heather Mills where some people are suggesting Paul McCartney is the greatest living Englishman. Personally I think he is a popular entertainer and nothing more, but it got me thinking who I would nominate.
I met him once, we got talking about when he proposed to Heather Mills, I asked him if he went down on one leg, and he gave me an odd look and stormed off. Strange man. Pothole said:
All very white, middle class so far...shocking.
87% of the population of England is white (and even more so if you only class people born in England was being "English") - it should therefore come as no surprise that the majority of the suggestions would be of this ethnicity. But as an aside - Freddie Mercury wasn't white he was asian (suggested on page 1), neither is Frank Bruno (suggested on page 2).
