What????!!!! You actually saw workmen digging up the road???? Wow!

Last Sunday morning I drove for about 36 miles through an interminable 50 mph restricted "road works" coned zone of the M6 and I saw not one single fcensoreding workman. :irate:
rofl

Do you know how long it would take to lift and re-install 36 miles of traffic management just so it was on while people were on site? Would you prefer that? Crash cushions, lane closures etc for 36 miles every morning and evening? Not to mention reinstating any signs or warning markings, lane widths, safety fence etc?

Or do you expect the guys not to have any time off? It's OK, they're manual workers so don't deserve Sundays off, and should work 24/7?

Again, rofl

Unreasonable to the extreme.

I do wonder about the economics of major roadworks like the M6 and M1 widening. Would it be better for the sub contractors to charge the highway agency twice as much, but work on a double shift pattern to get the job done in half the time for example? I know it's hard to quantify the cost implications or benefits of less disruption to the traffic, but at least the man in the street (or car on a motorway) would be able to see some sort of progress, rather than miles of cones that are seemingly redundant.

The inability for some people to realise the timing on temporary traffic lights at roadworks may be set for optimum fkin flow 24fkin7, and cannot be altered remotely for tidal fkin flows.

:joeydeacon:
However if, for example, one of the workmen digging up the fkin road had looked up for 5 seconds then it would have been very fkin obvious that the timing was seriously fkin wrong.
Or simply utilise better technology? We have digital control that can adapt and process many, many variables but apparently sequencing two sets of lights to adapt to actual traffic flow is way beyond our current tech...
The technology for temporary signals is still very much in it's infancy. Permanent signals with a (big) box of controllers and 24 hours to set up, commission and monitor... Not practical on temps. Plus there is the issue with compressors, cables, wireless signals etc - I used a set of wireless recently, turns out the frequency the local railway line use to turn THEIR signals on and off was the same, which turned my signals off completely, usually at 6pm or something. Not my fault, and not something I can remedy without replacing the whole network, but try telling that to the people stuck in traffic.

That said, these are the same people who flash their headlights at the RADAR detector to try and get them to change rofl

Also the guys digging the holes aren't qualified to start fking around with signals and timings etc, they simply don't have the ticket for it.
Really ? So what happens then ? Is there a separate group that rock up and setup the traffic lights before the roadworks start and then return back to remove them once the roadworks guys have finished ?
By the way, we're not talking about a motorway here, we're talking about a B road in the back of beyond.

Shifts Bob. Shifts. Shiftwork is the answer. I spent most of my working life on shiftwork keeping the projects or services running 24/7.

To me it makes no sense to have all that infrastructure laid out, installed, operational, whatever, and not utilised for long periods.

Mind you, I suppose it brings in a lot of revenue from the scameras if the motorway improvements take twice as long as necessary. Perhaps they are actually funding the works.

Or just fixed price contracts.

Oh cock, we're over budget for these roadworks this month. Lets just stick one man on it for an hour a day for a month so we don't have to clear up the cones and we can crack on next month.

Ironic statement to post on an internet forum

My boss' (Head of Compliance) incorrect use of apostrophes in documents/manuals:

PEP's (plural of Politically Exposed Person)
NGO's (document title)

also:

(on the telephone): "I sent an email to yourself last Tuesday"

another colleague in emails:

"We will require a copy of a passport from yourself"

Have brought it to their attention!

As much as I appreciate the importance of the us election, I thought that the deaths of 7 people in the Croydon tram crash maybe deserved a higher slot in the news. Just me ?

I agree.
I kind of cared about the election but after Trump's win it was over and I didn't want any more news on it.

I agree. I found it quite sad that the news of seven dead and many injured was only given a small five minute slot.
