A bit council (Vol 4)

Bought some alcohol in Sainsburys at the self service this week and the attendant came over and verified I was over 18 (just pressed the OK button didn't ask to see ID) later on in the same trolley I had some Redbull and the machine wouldn't let me pay until that was verified as well even though the alcohol was 18 rated and the energy drink was 16 rated which just seems stupid to me.

On the flipside. I was ID'd for 20 Marlboro at 31 years old, the cashier was 19. I went on to date her for 8 months.

I’ve experienced a real mix on this. We spend at least 3 weeks a year in the States and I now tend to take my passport out in cities with a party reputation as a lot of doormen get funny about a British driving licence. In other places they just don’t care. I reckon I got ID’d at most 10 times on our last trip and we must have visited 40+ bars. Never once got ID’d in a restaurant. For reference I’m a baby faced skinny 33 year old.

It must turn young Brit guys of 18, 19, and 20 into apoplectic raging nutters to hear “No”, when they ask for a beer in the U.S., having been going in pubs back home for a year or two.
On another note, in the late seventies, I drove my American girlfriend, and her friend, both twenty, back to college in Binghamton NY from NYC.
I pulled into a diner, near Hancock NY for a sandwich, and asked for 3 beers, the waiter asked for the girls ID, I said, “It’s okay pal, I’ll vouch for them”, he came back with, “they may be your daughters sir, but I have to see some ID.”
Screams of laughter, and a faceful of egg.

lol I'm 37 and was Id'd last Christmas buying a bottle of brandy ...I wanted to hug the lady on the till ...until I realised I didn't have any ID on me !!! Was in Asda as well

Did I shout a load of racist insults ...no I turned on the charm, was very apologetic and "she let me off this time"

Downend and Fishponds are pretty much adjoining districts of Bristol, and both are well East of the city centre. 5.6 mile round trip there would be 45 minutes max.
