So I now have a dilemma.... I like shopping in Home Bargains (plenty cheap ) but my childrens names don't appear in the top 100 list.

it is funny a lot of the girls names are prawn star names.
Planning ahead?Anyway, baby related, putting Silvercross (or other brand) prams and accessories on finance, council!
When we bought ours a few years ago (<£300, not Silvercross), a couple next to use were financing nigh on £2k's worth of pram etc.

How about breeding so young that six generations are alive at the same time?

Several of them gave birth at 16, the youngest waited till she was 20.

Can't quite beat that but one of my wife's friends is about to become a great grandmother at the age of 49. (She gave birth at 17 to a daughter who gave birth at 15 to a daughter who is pregnant at 16) At least they are consistent.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-38201567

Notwithstanding gauche and incompetent TV-inspired household "improvements", this thread has me reaching the conclusion that the single most council thing is living in a housing estate.
How do you define an estate though? I'd imagine 90% of PH'ers live in a house with other houses in close proximity (that don't belong to staff).Tom_C76 said:

surely some of the older ones are excluded as they were from a different time?http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-38201567

I think re: location/location/location: arguably if on a limited income, buying an ex council prop can give you a great home, for say £100k somewhere. it'll give you a start in life. they tend to be good sized, good gardens. buy well and you'll buy next to other owners. clearly in village locations there are some gems to be had.
the issue with the TV prog, is in la la la london land: no ex council flat/house is worth that sort of cuckoo money, because your neighbours and that entire area will be utterly awful. £500k in la la land isn't buying a nice place where you'd be happy being on the streets at night. But to have that sort of money is some achievement in itself, eg in respect of earning power etc.
I recall seeing a prog, showing the countries first £1m ex council flat. Jeez if I'd rented that place for a weekend break in landan, I'd have been unhappy about the state of the place outside.
Ive just been on a brand new, new build estate (social housing). maybe 100 houses. its all let to Pakistani's. the area, paths, drives and the houses I've been in were all filthy. these are houses built on a size scale that the landan folk will never in a million years be able to own.
10 mins later I'm on an entirely white traditional 1930's and 50's built council estate. the area, paths, drives and the houses I've been in were all filthy.
I just do not get why people decide to live in filth and fail to tidy their own environments up. I sort of get 70 years of things slipping: but brand spanking new homes.
apparently we have a housing crisis. I wish to goodness the government would read this thread because its news to me.
It's all about being realistic and sensible isn't it. Me and the wife are currently looking at RTB. Both our ex partners left us with a load of debt and I ended up having to sell my house, whilst the OH lived in a 2 bedroom ground floor LH flat. We both work full time jobs and have paid back our debts rather than running away from them.the issue with the TV prog, is in la la la london land: no ex council flat/house is worth that sort of cuckoo money, because your neighbours and that entire area will be utterly awful. £500k in la la land isn't buying a nice place where you'd be happy being on the streets at night. As the OH has 9 years residency we are entitled to a RTB. We managed to get an exchange into a 3 bed end terrace in North Leeds a couple of years ago so have lived there and got to know the neighbourhood. It's not ideal as an area but will allow us to get back onto the property ladder, and we are looking to do some work on it to help it fit us better as a family.
Once we have put in a new kitchen and built in a workspace for me to WFH, I would realistically put the sale value at around £125k. Purchase price including the renovation work should come in considerably below that, with the mortgage being approximately equal to our current rent. We then have a 5 year period where we are tied to the property unless we pay back some of the discount given - but after that 5 years we will be debt free and hopefully will have overpaid our way to a decent position to move up the ladder with regards to surroundings.
Just because somebody lives in a council house doesn't necessarily make them council! Although looking at a lot of the things said above I am probably more council than I thought

But Pieman, I'd disagree with you and say you are far from Council ? Why? because you are actively doing something positive about your situation. Yr not saying- everyone else help me out. Leeds is a rich city, housing is expensive. why not use the system to give yourselves a fresh start.
social housing is such a wonderful concept: I'm all for people having decent safe homes to live in, but it being affordable on a lower income. why not: not everyone will be a powerfully built Ph'er being able to afford a white leased golf R and a faux sandstone new build.
The biggest issue is the sale of social housing: you can't replace it, people profit from it, the capital receipts never went back to the council who lost the homes either.

Whereabouts is this? I'm in north Leeds and you don't see 3 bed end terraces round here for that. In fact you struggle to find 1 bed terraces for that if you're talking proper north Leeds as in north of the ring road, not Chapeltown "north Leeds".[...]
I would realistically put the sale value at around £125k.
