It's funny how time flies, Ruby's just coming up to 20 months!! Hope all is well with you Gary!!

We're now listening to Ruby singing 'What am i gonna do' from the Molly and Mack song, but she say can only really say 'what' and 'do' and then a load of jibberish in between. Oh, and she can say back pack really well, because when she' sees her back pack/reins thing hanging up she says it over and over again constantly until you put it on her and take her out for a walk.
Yep all good here thanks! Sounds like a familiar tale laugh Her character is really coming out now, she can almost run in small doses, turn your back for two seconds and she's accelerated away into one of many dangerous sitautations, her 0-1mph time is impressive!

Glad all is well at yours too and the grandparents can get to spend some time with them now.

Hi everyone, our first child is due 8th September and I must admit I've been pretty relaxed about preparing everything we need for the arrival, but in the last couple of weeks it's just kicked in that we are having a child in 3 months and I've got to get ready!

So far we have bought a next-to-me cot thing (Snuzpod3) so sleeping is all sorted from 0-6 months and her parents are sorting out the pram/car seat which has also helped a lot.

I was on the Tommee Tipee website after reading about the perfect prep machine which looks great but we also need a breast pump so I was looking at the Made For Me Expressing bundle, should we get both? or is it one of the other?

I have to say this all getting a bit bloody scary, I don't want to not have enough or get the wrong things.

Does anyone have a small list of things we definitely need to get/things to avoid?

TIA

Simon

Lots of nappies and lots of vests/babygrows I would say. It's amazing how often they need changing at first! Muslins are great for just mopping up after milk and general things.

We also had one of those triangular pillow things for when theyre inevitably sleeping on you for hours on end.

I look back on that time fondly now. I could easily watch a couple of episodes of a boxset whilst mine was napping (Gomorrah at the time). Now it's mainly making sure they don't fall off something they've climbed on/get something from somewhere they shouldn't be/put something in somewhere it shouldn't go etc.

The other tricky thing is eating properly, you get caught up in making sure baby has naps and feeds at the right time you can forget about eating properly yourself so I'd say just try and think about that a bit. You'll really enjoy mooching around Tesco when it gets you out of the house for half an hour, especially in the first few weeks!!

Hey Simon, don't panic you aren't the first or last to panic, I panicked too. I would say to hold off buying either of these just now! Do you have amazon prime? If not I would personally spend my money buying this as it was a god send in the first few months. Getting a prep machine means you aren't going to breastfeed which is totally fine but if you want to give breastfeeding a go then there's no need to buy one unless you struggle and want to move over to a formula feed at which point buy one and get it next day.

Same for the bump I personally wouldn't buy one until you think you need it as again amazon next / even same day but get the one you think you want in a wish list.

Starting this thread clearly didn't put me off enough - so we're having another one. Expected 21st November!

Which is all very exciting indeed, took my wife to the hospital yesterday for her first scan and all is looking just fine. I didn't like that I just had to sit in the car and wait instead of being in there to help, not that I needed to worry, but you do, don't you?

At the same time, my wife has been really unwell with the morning sickness being "all the time sickness" and she's barely been able to get out of bed for the last 6 weeks, and so I'm doing most of the running around after our 2 year old who doesn't understand a) why we can't go anywhere that we normally would, why she can't see her friends/grandparents/anyone etc and b) doesn't understand that you can't jump around on mummy and climb all over her because you want a cuddle.

This has all hit at the time when she no longer sleeps all night again. Every single night now, she wakes up, gets out of bed and comes into our room, and any attempts to put her back to her own bed just result in her kicking/screaming/running around and doing whatever she can to avoid being in her bed. Can't leave her, she'll inevitably just her herself on something no matter how careful we are!
Congrats! Very similar in our house except (thankfully) our 22 month old is a decent sleeper. We sleep trained the heck out of her, but that is definitely not for everybody.

We also still keep ours in The Cage (cot). And will do for a while. Perhaps you could try putting her back in a cot and doing some sleep training? I don't know if it can be done at 2 years, but if it can it may help.

If anything like our process at 7 months, will be hugely unpleasant for a week, and then life-alteringly useful.

Used one with ours. Worked well. Common in the US, and my wife is a Yank, so she was pretty comfortable with them.

Our NCT class leader was very anti then. I don’t recall specifically why. I think it related to the pictures of how the baby is shown using them... might not recall it the best but worth reading all things on it

Same. We used one anyway but all of Lady Fs US friends used one so were pretty comfortable.

I think the risk is baby turning into the sides and suffocating? So worth reading.

Apparently absolutely everything is a risk with a newborn. There is a whole industry built on fear for new parents. The Sleepyhead itself came about from fear of babies rolling into their fronts and dying. Of course, when we were infants, NHS recommendation was to place us on our fronts - it's how I slept as a newborn!

Lots of snake oil and bad advice sold to scared new parents by everyone, from NCT through NHS to big companies. Some mean well, some mean to profit. But healthy babies seem pretty robust, in reality!

We’ve used a Sleepyhead for both of ours and would highly recommend it. We found that our girls never moved to anywhere near the side parts as they simply can’t move that much, and anyway I once tried pushing my face against the bolster and could breath easily.

Hi Simon,

If you’re considering going down the expressing route I’d recommend looking to hire a hospital grade pump as we found it to be much more effective than the one we’d previously bought - both in terms of how much milk it produced and how long it took to do so. Think it cost us £45 a month to hire. Even with twins it left us only needing a couple of formula feeds a day for each of them. I’d still recommend the Perfect Prep machine though - messing about with boiling kettles then waiting for it to cool sufficiently gets old really quickly at 2am, not to mention, 4:30am...

In regards to the milk prep machine, we looked into this as well and read mixed reviews on it and how you'd get residue and stuff even though we get glorious Yorkshire water, I gave it a pass.

We just boil a kettle and fill a flask which keeps it warm for most of the day then do again for the night.
You can run the bottle under a cold tap or put it in a bottle of cold water to cool for a few mins if it's too hot also it isn't really any less convenient.

Do get the tomme tipee bottles 6 pack and steriliser though.

I'd recommend a baby bouncer or swing too as it helps put baby to sleep really quickly, well ours anyway.

Water wipes are also best for newborns during the early months as we find they are the gentlest then move onto pampers or any other brand.

Tub of sudocream or especially Metanuim is great for nappy rash.

there is a fair amount of counter-advice to sleepyheads due to suffocation risk.

Thank you for this advice and from others, I forgot we had a copy of the "Commando Dad" book and that had a big list of items and also covered feeding - feeling much better now!

Good luck!

Sat here rocking our 7week old daughter, can't believe it's been 7 weeks already!! Starting to interact with things a lot more now (having gone through first 'leap' in wonderweeks app). We've borrowed some baby scales and have found she's pilling on weight at 240-330g a week at the moment and having gone up from 13rd percentile at birth to into the 33rd now.

It's a real relief to my wife as it shows the breastfeeding is working - although the explosive nappies do seem to show that one too

Hi chaps

We are expecting our 2nd in a few months and our son will move to the front passenger seat. But I'm confused about whether the airbag should be enabled or not. He will be 3 soon and sits in a fairly bulky seat (Joie Every Stage FX). I'm minded to leave it on to prevent the worst but at the same time, apparently the impact from the airbag alone is quite powerful for an adult, let alone a child confused

As for those who couldn't attend scans, see if the scan operator will let your partner video call you next time.
