I remember the freezing ice that hit Hampshire in the late 90s. We got home just before. Neighbours got in 30mins later and couldn’t get the car to their house. Driver got out and fell on his arse. So he got the car mats out and used them as stepping stones to ferry him, his wife and 2 kids, moving the one he had just stepped off to the front until he got to his house.

However, his boxer dog faired not quite so well. He hopped out of the hatchback and... well basically it was like watching that scene from Bambi. Not, not “that” one, his mum didn’t get shot, I mean the one on the frozen pond with the rabbit!

Still horrid rain and wind here.
Late reply, I was living in Aldershot in the late 90's. My house was below street level so I had about 6 steps up to the street. I managed the second step before everything went a bit tits up and I ended up flat on my back on the floor at the foot of the steps. Rang the mate I was going to walk down and meet and cancelled, then got a call from work and they tried to call me in to The Royal Surrey hospital to deal with all the casualties (I am a radiographer) I declined as there was no way I could have done the 12 miles in to work without killing myself. Apparently that afternoon one of the orthopaedic surgeons reduced and potted 28 wrist fractures one after the other

The old janners used to come in to the pharmacy moaning about damp mild winters "T'aint seasonal, us needs cold weather to kill all the bugs".

I used to tell them that cold weather kills people, not bugs. I'm not sure they really believed me as they'd come in the next year and say exactly the same.

After a few years I gave up......
Thought that story was going somewhere else

Little change - apart from the high pressure for Xmas might be poorly aligned for some parts, in terms of cold. Southern half of UK currently forecast to have cloud and so some warmth.

SSW still modeled, but pushing back slightly. As per earlier in the year, a 2nd SSW is also on the cards.
SSW - fk that!

The cold was bad enough at the end of Feb. I'm guessing if it happens soon, it'll be even colder when we see the effects of it?

Colorado. 17c today, -5c tomorrow with ~4cm snow.

Other positives; slight chance of snow tuesday/wednesday/thursday. Due to start late Tuesday, so it won't be a white Chrimbo, alas.
This was pretty much how I spent my day on Wednesday - working a 7 mile stretch of I70 that got hammered in a storm that lasted all day.

I also handed out a few $1100 tickets to truckers who decided that Colorado's chain laws didn't apply to them, and subsequently ended up getting stuck in the snow and blocking traffic.

Ever seen a truck use one of the run off zones? Isn't it $5k to reset them?

I've dealt with quite a few - the one at mile marker 209 is pretty popular! I'm not sure of the exact cost - CDOT just comes out and smooths out the gravel after the truck gets pulled out. Recovering the truck is expensive - the wrecking firms charge thousands for that as it can be a long process, especially if the truck jackknifed or went all the way up.

Yes - the SSW is happening over Xmas and models today have started showing the effects early Jan. A split vortex is expected and might end up over Europe- bringing the cold air to us.

Nothing to get excited about at the moment. Top far out, and we have high pressure for the foreseeable future.

I can't imagine a truck making it all the way up there!
An ex colleague of mine used to drive trucks and was talking about them. The 5k might well have been the recovery cost. I'm surprised that they're used frequently, thought it might be a once a year thing.

It can be a weekly thing in the summer. Here's one I dealt with - the truck made it up around 750 feet.

I note the Florida plate!

To make it that far, I bet it was relieved it was there.

Back on topic, there was a hint of snow earlier this evening, but it was more ice crystals in the air than anything else.

Chances of a white christmas appears to have fallen too, alas.

There are some charts beginning to show some serious weather porn for coldies - for around 7th Jan, obviously out of reliable range.

It’s not rained today! Hooray and hoozah!
Thick frost this morning, cold and clear later on. Lots of ice on the moors, but good to see some sunshine before the fog/mist/murk descends. Have a great Christmas weather watchers.

Didn't spot the Christmas Day fog at my parent's place in Hertfordshire but we did get a lovely Christmas frost, could almost pretend it had snowed overnight.

Netweather is suggesting my corner of Essex will be warming up a bit on Sunday before getting very chilly again on Wednesday!
