I guess the ssw that was forecast over xmas is not going to deliver the hoped for snow/cold snap.

You can never tell - it will have a marked effect somewhere, and usually it works for us. The SSW is certainly happening right now, and effects take 1-2 weeks to manifest themselves (normally more towards 2 weeks).

The fly in the ointment is this high pressure. It's poorly positioned, hence all the grey cloud. It's also hanging around and very stubborn. On the flip side, if the high migrates NE to Scandi, or NW to Greenland - we are in for a treat.

I can't tell if it's cold and icy outside today as it's too warm and misty to see. frown

Very frustrating when we get high pressure but no clear blue skies to go with it... instead just an endless damp grey blanket of miserableness

A snippet of good news, many of us under the grey blanket will start to see some sky. So cooler temps and frosts go with that.

The high pressure is ultra-stubborn, it's causing a cold wave to hit Greece currently. Inklings that it will move NW, providing some cold winds in around a weeks time. Not currently forecast though.

I’m amazed at how mild it remains. Brilliant for being able to do stuff over Xmas but I wouldn’t mind a bit of the white stuff now!

A couple of cold fronts, and the winds changing from westerly to northerly over tonight/tomorrow will see a distinct change. For a short time.

The SSW is happening tomorrow - so things will start to change. As ever, an SSW is not a guarantee of cold and snow!

Decent chance of a white new year, as it's snowing right now. -8c, too, so it's settling. And the wife wants to go shopping. Arse.

Where about are you DA? I'm heading out to Pyhä on the 20th Jan for a week, this next 5 days looks great for getting some decent depth to the snowpack, I'm hoping for another 40cm+ in the next 2 weeks so I can sample the Pyhä backcountry.

Glad I picked Finland now, the western Alps are looking terrible at the minute! :O

I'd be quite happy never to see snow in this country again

I'm in southern Finland. I'm sure in north there'll be lots more of snow.

A beautiful still New Years Day down here in Devon, blue sky with some haze and bright winter sunshine.
