One from my wife this morning.

I love you.

I'm struggling with this. Is this a trap?

Yes I reply, turns out she has booked a surprise for my birthday on that date. If I don’t go football I lose the money. If she cancels, nothing is lost. I told her to cancel but now I am in the wrong??
Its because she has bought something for you can you are saying you don't want it. Rather than cancel it can the date of her thing be changed?
It's a tricky thing, planning a surprise. What was it BTW?
I'm assuming dinner but I don't know so it can be moved.
If you don't know, how do you know it can be moved?

Absolutely. You need to do the 3 checks - is the car damaged? is the credit card maxed? do you have an unusual burning sensation when you pee?

Sunday my son and his partner were round for lunch and if any of you know Yate in South Glos you'll know the dual carriageway that was built 40 years ago but stops at the railway as there's no bridge its known as The Road To No Where. They were passing the road and he pointed it out and told her "that's the road to no-where". Her reply "where does it go to?"
I hadn't heard of this before and I've just looked it up on Google Maps. I love random anomalies like this!

She booked something for you and you asked her to cancel it without finding out what it was. No wonder she is upset.

I think the point is he'd already booked and paid for something on that date, and had put it on a calendar they both use specifically for that purpose.

well she didn't put it in the calendar or tell him to keep that date free... the guy isn't a mindreader. It doesn't sound like it was the date of his actual birthday either given the wording, so it's not like he's sending a clear message he doesn't want to be with her on his birthday or anything. I am sure if he just bellowed "fkING CANCEL IT B*TCH" then she'd have every reason to be upset, but again sounds like he explained the cancellation complications. It's clearly the right outcome; it's just all about how you convey the message.

Correct, it’s a week after my birthday. I have paid for tickets whereas she has a reservation.

Restaurant in question is highly regarded (3 stars last time I checked) but no money has changed hands.

Very nice of her but she could have put a keep free in the diary.

Just checked, it’s now 2, lost one last year. It’s renowned for it’s tasting menu but having a look at a sample a lot of it would be wasted on me. Nice gesture but I’m more of a nice country pub type person.

Suggests either she doesn't know you or it's a present for her dressed-up as a present for you.

Personally I'd be cancelling footy tickets for a 2-star meal out, unless it was a Cup Final or World Cup...but each to their own...

I’ve made comment that i’d like to try it which is where she got the idea and again great gesture from here but only a comment in passing.

Indeed, each to their own.

Rookie stuff. NEVER mention any kind of interest whatsoever in something expensive, if it's something that she will also like.

Before you know where you are you've paid a flupping fortune for your own stupid present, you're not really bothered about going anyway, she's absolutely over the moon to be going, it hasn't cost her anything and SHE'S playing the hero.

Hard to watch happen to a fellow plonker.
