I remember wasting hours of my youth on that 'game' round at my mate Alans house, on his dads HP desktop when we were supposed to be at school hehe
I'm sad to report I don't know what the game was; was it good? Bad? Hard?
I enjoyed it and its sequels thumbup

Great game, well, not great, but fun, well, not fun, annoying and I don't think we ever completed it. hehe
You just need to be totally anal and note down EVERYTHING you see
I remember playing it with the benefit of a full walkthrough guide and it was still tricky!

Not so much 'hard' as 'entirely devoid of logic or reason'. My memory of it is something along the lines of

1) Pull lever
2) Something happens, somewhere, probably on the other side of the island.
3) Spend a hour working out what.
4) Give up and play something fun instead.
We loved those games. Quite advanced for the time I suppose, but I can see why people lost interest in them quickly.

It's funny how things have evolved over the years. Obscure fiendish puzzles and being stuck for hours was consider "a good thing" back in those days. Whereas today it's utterly tedious and boring.

I replayed "The Secret of Monkey Island" when it was remastered and re-released a year or two ago, and I was struck by how much of it was a succession of tedious fetch quests.
