Donation-based Crowdfunding: Begging?

The worst crowd funding one I saw was the stupid girl in America who jumped from a house roof at a pool party, missed the swimming pool she was aiming for and broke both her legs landing on solid ground - cue huge medical bills.
Thnakfully on this occasion I think that the sob story fundraising account made a whole $300 after people mercilessly ripped the piss out of it all over the Internet

How do we feel about funding funerals? There has been a trend of late for people who have died young to have their funeral paid for by crowd sourcing. I have to say I'm not a fan, particularly if the money is to be spent on a horse and carriage and a load of flowers.

Donations to a hospice / cancer charity I've not got an issue with.

It's the attitude of getting someone else to pay for it. Understandable if there is a genuine story or plausible case behind it, but many of these campaigns are designed to be just that.

Easy money.

Let's not get our house insured (because that will cost) and in the event of a massive loss, simply make a public plea with a heartfelt story (written by someone else, obvs) about how we've lost everything at the worst possible time.

Having said that, I don't think there are many people raking in vast sums of money.

The one person I know who did one raised about £40 and she had a semi reasonable cause.

I wouldn't use GFM, however, I have used just giving to raise sponsorship for well known charities. I ran the Great North Run last year and raised £1400 for the British Red Cross, this year, I'm running the Great North Run in aid of RNLI.

Successful, profitable business (by their own admission, it's in the description) wants to expand and open new premises. Starts up kickstarter to fund it, fails to reach goal, pockets £6500 anyway. Complete and utter madness.
