Coconut shy with a contactless card machine? I think not.... for a long while at least.

My other half raises over £5k a year for the RSPB ... badges of birds - box on the counter - quid each. When will that cardboard box have contactless?

Eventually, of course, but no time soon.
I reckon it'll be sooner than you think. Contactless charity donation boxes are already a thing, but Iv'e not seen one in the wild yet.

Occasional sellers like local fete and a car boot sales are going to be more of a problem than big charities, but there other payment methods out there too. Phone to phone payments have existed for years, but are relatively uncommon in the UK, you don't even need a bank account. I'm clearly a dinosaur but loads of the younger lot at work use Tikkie to send each other money via WhatsApp.

There are lots of areas where cash will still be important. Today, for instance, I banked almost £1,000 in cash (notes and LOTS of coins), the proceeds of programme sales for my operatic society's recent production of "Evita". I cannot see how programmes could be sold in the foyer to our patrons. To try to transact something like that quickly, easilly and with NO COST TO THE SOCIETY using some sort of electronic system would be difficult to say the least.
The no cost to the society is the big thing there, but how soon will it be before the decline in people carrying cash means the extra sales you'd make by taking contactless outweigh the cost of having a contactless payment system?

Cashless society?

I think I am almost ready to join the ranks, as my cash supply is rapidly dwindling... frown

Plenty of people still using cash. It's declining but a large proportion of poor, old and vulnerable people still use it to pay a lot of bills in convenience shops.

Cash is a much, much more robust way of budgeting. Once it's gone it's gone. Maybe debit cards should get hotter or emit a shriek the emptier they get.

If things were tight I'd be cash only for that reason.

They do. But statistically it's the young and poor that don't have bank accounts.... therefore no cards.

Banking app helps with that, chap. All transactions are really detailed. Even shows the Money In/Money Out comparison (bar chart).

Eta dont businesses get stung by credit card transactions, hence card reader out of order situation?
More than you might think!

I'm in the process of buying a bike at the moment for a shade under £3k, so (PH goatee crew prepare to be shocked!) decided to put it on a 0% credit card until I've sold various bits off my old bike.

A I don't yet have the card I wanted to pay with, I asked the bike company if I could pay on another card just to get my bike into the build queue, then cancel that transaction and pay with the new card when it arrives.

I had assumed that they'd get their fees for the first transaction refunded when they refunded me. It turns out that not only do they not get the first lot of fees refunded, they get charged fees again to do the refund!

Needless to say, I'll hold off ordering until the new card arrives!

Except for dodgy deals, cash has been relegated to petty cash for odd incidentals. If you are well organised, budgeting is far easier with credit or debit cards and there's no chance losing the change.

For those who are disorganised, keep using cash hehe

The amount of pissed-up stumbling blokes I see in the city centre (early hours) getting out of the taxis (to use ATM). Who can't remember their PIN and then try to walk off, whilst taxi drivers shout: Thief! laugh

I prefer cash. If I receive cash it's obviously easier for me to spend cash, I don't want to have to put it into a bank.

And the less corporations and governments know about my daily activities the better imo.

Taxi drivers are the worst for accepting cards. Many still flatly refuse to accept cards and offer a lift to the ATM. This is companies that advertise they have chip and pin in every car. If booking a car over the phone they always ask what payment method.

I've also come across taxi drivers who still think they are allowed to add fees for using cards.

Contactless devices are freely available...there’s no reason Betty can’t sell her cakes card only these days.

Charities are suffering with the move to cashless as people don’t have spare change any more for collection boxes etc. There has started to be an embracing of technology with the likes of Goodbox and others

I rarely have change these days as I rarely use cash. Have had to go into a shop and break a note before now just to get change to put in a charity box. Then the change usually goes into my "delivery driver fund" (the cash I pay the takeaway delivery person). Rarely actually use cash or carry more than £20 these days.

Whats a cheque??
Sent one off this morning. :0)
Can't remember the last time I used one or received one to be honest!
I can pay in cheques through my bank app. My old dad gives me a cheque I pay it in and rip it up and put it in the bin

Great, so you're going to have to buy £5's worth of air every time you want to fill your tyres?

"Freely" may be the wrong word to use, but they're certainly widely available for not much money. £23 is still a fair bit for a stand at at a fete that might might not make much profit though

It’s not the service that is an issue. It’s the processing costs
