Just as aside what about folks who live in 1 house all their lives ?
What’s all that about ?

Moving into your parents bedroom once they have passed away with your partner…
Sounds like my brother in law, although he has not moved into his parents bedroom yet. He is 56 years old and has only ever lived in that house. Still lives there after the parents passed on a few years back. Never been abroad and works at the same place he has worked since he left school. Never married and not sure he has ever had a girlfriend. If it wasn't for his sister living 80 miles away I am not sure he would ever travel more than 20 miles from home.

Of my group of friends from 6th form we range from the one who bought his grandfathers house in the same village he grew up in, to two who moved to Australia. I'm somewhere in between having moved to Europe.

My uncle was like that. Heavily Asperger’s basically but obviously that wasn’t a thing when he was at school so he was just a ‘bit unusual’.

The parents died, house too much for him so family helped sell it and he’s been about 1 mile away since. Worked as a postman for 40 odd years. Did travel the world though and had pen friends all over. Peculiar but he seems happy.

You could offer me a million pounds tax free cash and a free 5 bed detached house with triple garage in North London (where I grew up) and I wouldn't even consider moving back.

First house was 4 doors down from parents in south Cheshire.
Second was within 1/2 mile.
Third was 59 miles east in Derbyshire.
Wife didn't like it so 6 months later back in south Cheshire.
Fourth house within 1/2 mile of parents.
Fifth house within 1/2 mile of parents.

Sixth and current house the last 23 years, 3 miles from parents.
Wifes position, "work wherever you want but this is your hub".

Worked and commuted to Germany, Switzerland and Sweden, while covering North America and India.
Its been the best of both worlds and I've thoroughly enjoyed all the travel.

Not at all.
Born in Dublin, couple of years in London, shorter stints in Paris and Stokholm, moved to Montreal,a while on Manhattan and now permanently in Toronto with another place on Scottsdale AZ.

Like many expats there is no “home” as such.
People who have stayed at home base are understandably different for me-they have their own communities and have very different experiences and in many way do not have the anonymity of someone who moves around. When I go back to Dublin rarely it is a prosperous place in the Eurozone and has very little connection with my youth and I am of course an elderly stranger.

Inevitable result of the choices I made of course .I am happy with my choices but well aware of the consequences in terms of loss of history.

Back when i lived in Doncaster, i once got chatting to an older woman and mentioned we had been to Whitby.
Where is that?
The coast about x miles away, north of east of York.
Where is York?

Hold on....have you ever been outside of Doncaster?
No
You've never been to Sheffield then?
Where is that?
