Our woodwork teacher used to keep the end of his cane in a can of linseed oil by the blackboard where everyone could see it when you walked past....yikes

Sadistic bd, but he was a good teacher though.

Back in the day, we we truly feared the cane along with the expected follow-up retrebution from dad!.....often this was enough to keep even the most unruly of kids in check.

It won't fkIN kill you, so what exactly IS the problem?......if you care to read my profile on dislikes, you'll get a good idea on my opinions of those that are opposed to this kind of discipline. thumbup

caning was a regular part of the day. not knowing the place in bible reading ensured you were brought up to the front and caned...saying thankyou sir really pissed him off and got you another. He just loved it and so it certainly made you pay attention.

I went to school in Glasgow in the sixties, where as others have said we were 'belted'. A leather strap about 18 inches long with two tails. Six would make even the hardest blokes in the school, and there were some hard bds, cry.

I only got belted once, along with all of the boys in the class, when someone, still unknown, put potassium permanganate into the tropical fish tank in the science block and killed them all.

I know times have changed, but no-one gave the teachers any crap at the school I went to. Amongst other things it taught an entire generation that actions have consequences, sometimes unpleasant.

As I recall, the teacher asked "who put the potassium permanganate in the fish tank?', plus the water was purple! It probably wasn't ribena, 'cos all the fish were floating belly up on the top. byebye

I was always too much of a goody-goody to be on the receiving end, but in Junior school assemblies, if the Headmaster (Mr Cox, nice man, reminded me of Hitler though) saw anyone mucking about, he would request a plimsoll off of one of the kids in the front row, then drag the miscreant to the front of the hall by the ear and get all Jimmy Edwards on his ass.

An effective deterrent.

When I was in the sixth form we used to get caned regularly, then they had a clamp-down on booze and drugs!

When I was at school in South Africa, the Headmaster and the Games teacher had wooden bats, about twice the size of a table tennis bat, which they would use to dish out the law.
I got it from each of them, once for not doing my homework, the other for breaking a paintbrush. This was in the early 80's and I dont think it did me any harm.

I went to an all boys grammar school from the early to mid 1980's and caning was on the menu. It was the deputy head's perk and thinking back there was hardly ever any real problems. As someone said earlier the fear of it kept us all in check. Is it coincidence that our social problems are down to lack of discipline in schools?
The school became a mixed sex school after i left so presume the caning policy was reviewed?

I wasn't caned but it was the norm at two of the mixed sex private schools I went to.

Did this happen as much in state schools? I don't know if it was generational or more a part of the private or grammar school systems.

It didn't happen at the last school I went to which was an all girls school though.

Yeah, they had those at Selborne Primary in East London where I went. The teacher used to do it in front of the rest of the class and the noise of the bat contacting the unfortunates backside was enough to keep the rest of the class in check for a while.
