In other words, Tevye the milkman in the movie version of "Fiddler on the Roof" - which he later reprieved in various stage versions. Hard to believe he was only 30 odd when he played Tevye in the movie.

I remember as a kid seeing him play Topol on stage in the West End.

I'd assumed he died years ago.

And let's not forget his co-starring role alongside Roger Moore in For Your Eyes Only.

"I know, I know. We are Your chosen people. But, once in a while, can't You choose someone else?"

An unforgettable performance, and I wish long life to all his family.

The script of "Fiddler on the Roof" is very, very funny, but poignant and sad too.

The topics covered in it are as valid today as when it was written - or as they are for the period in which the story is set (Ukraine in the early 1900s).

Eric, this was the childhood of my mother’s parents. They married in Kiev shortly before coming to London in 1906. Pop was from a little country village just to the east of Kiev, Nan lived in the town.

My family looked on Fiddler as a sort of personal history, and it had a special place in all our hearts, especially as Topol looked so much like my Grandfather, stocky and immensely strong.

I've taken part in two productions of the show - each time enjoying it immensely.
