I have three copies of that sitting in the library. I thought that was a pie in the sky price, but seems they do go for a bit. I leafed through one the other day. The line 'Nig**r would have turned red if his face wasn't so black', underlined just how far things have moved on.
it is quite astonishing when compared with our modern sensibilities, isn't it?

I vaguely recall a line from one of the Thomas the Tank Engine books that describes how, after a train belching smoke and ash passed under a bridge that they were standing on, some boys were left with faces "as black as -racial epithet that begins with N-"

I suppose the words were written and used (in this case) with no intent of malice, it was just the word that was used at the time.

I've got an old village pic of a few people with blacked up faces, see if I can find it later.

In other news someone has taken a crap in a building and left their underwear by the side of it, there is of course the obligatory picture and big discussion about it.

Back in the 50's my dear old mum would refer to very dark brown clothes or shoes as Nig**r Brown. No malice intended at all; back then it was just an expression that people used without thinking of the meaning.

I was sat in a cafe in Delft a few years back when a couple of kids ran past blacked up. I'd never heard of Zwarte Piet before then https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zwarte_Piet

Now every December the local facebook groups are full of ex-pats being shocked by it.

I think the UK back then, for many, was very insular and they were quite naïve.

If you took a typical 1950's Brit and explained to them what the song "Strange Fruit" was really about, they'd look at you dumbfounded.

Similarly, when clearing out my grandma's place after her death she still had a couple of old Sylko cotton reels which were labelled by the manufacturer as "Nig**r Brown", for use on her sewing machine.

Its not about being naive, its about living in a world with constantly changing standards of what is or is not acceptable language and behaviour. To the best of my knowledge there is no list given to the public telling them what is acceptable to say this week, that wasn't last week, and vice versa.

Is it offensive to describe a gay, lesbian or bisexual as queer? It wasn't, then it was, and now it is to some and not others. Is it any surprise that older people may not always keep up? Sure some may say things knowing they are offensive; others are still simply using the terms that were acceptable without realising that on some certain date, because there must have been one, that the term went from ok to not ok.

The local butcher (that is a cheap meat reseller and doesn't butcher anything) keeps on posting variations of this despite me constantly asking for photos of the Donna options so I can pick one I like best.

The locals lap it up but they probably believe the words "quality" and "butcher" on the sign outside too, ask them about provenance and they look at you as if you're talking about a holiday in France.

This is the same lot that at the peak of lockdown went to Asda and bought every piece of chicken they could get to sell to nursing homes and fulfil orders they had taken without having the stock to actually do so.

This has just been listed for sale. I fear it may not go well.
Strangely enough, the last time I ever saw a Golliwog doll was at Portsoy Boat Festival. There was a sort of bric-a-brac stall where some old dears had knitted them for selling. This was around 15 years ago but I reckon up in the north east some folk are still as daft.

I've got one, well it's now called a Golly, my eldest bought it for me a number of years back as my late dad used to have a couple, he also had a collection of pin badges from Robertson jam (I think it was), back from when he was a kid.
