It used to be a police meme before memes existed. As in 'Now then, Now then, Let's be having you' (Letsby Avenue)
Letsby Avenue is where the police houses where. These were where policeman lived and ate and slept. They were very fond of stew for its warming qualities on night shift. Irish stew was a particular favourite. Irish stew in the name of the law.
