Same bracket as db10 but wouldn’t go near trophy cars. As someone said above, I have what I need and just want to remove all doubt that the children will have provision that I didn’t.
Impressive. What do you do?
I think DB10 is an accountant in the city?

If its PAYE (doubtful) then take home would be IRO £35k a month. Nice problem to have!!!

29, circa £45k/year, give or take as my earnings are different every month. Usually varies between £3500-5500 but typical of about £4k/month before deductions.

Yes USD, so knock 30% off for amount in proper money.
Pays well?! That's quite an understatement. Most people I know around that salary I would never ask if they enjoyed it as I believe they would claim to (to be motivational/hard wired to bullst), but since you're saying it here with no motive, congrats!
I wouldn't say no motivation but relative to my wife who is extremely work-motivated, 60+hrs a week is fairly normal (plus does some teaching and mentor stuff on the side) - hence why she earns close to twice what I do most years. I was just lucky to end up in fairly niche job in demand that I both enjoy pays relatively well.

Well, at 70 my income is not as it was at peak, but it does the job. About $US 600k a year now from investment income, pensions and a number of boards ( am on three public and one private) .

No debts. some properties and the only thing a bit extravagant is seven cars. OH is not a crazy spender so no worries that way; live in the same main house which is a Victorian downtown row house for 23 years. I love work - find the buzz fascinating and have zero desire to go on a world cruise, sit on some beach or take up gardening.

A common theme here seems to be how many wives/partners spending is out of control. Why is that? I currently have a basement containing 500+ coats with a value >100k, probably even more unworn shoes, glamour magazine subscriptions unread, every brand of perfume released in the past 15 years, fridges & larders bulging with excess food. Otherwise our relationship (sex etc, without going into details) is good but we frequently fight over money and excessive spending and her inability to cut back or even sell some of the unused stuff on ebay or elsewhere. What's the psychology going on here? Anyone have any similar experiences or remedies? Otherwise I'm thinking of bailing out......Life's too short and my (currently large) income won't last forever at this rate of spend.

Overspending on food ... she claims to struggle on 200 quid a week.... just for her, a few cats & a dog. Her way of food shopping go daily to Waitrose. I go home & first job is to clean the fridge. I throw out more fruit, veg, & ready meals that have gone off than I can fit in the bin. I keep telling her forget waitrose go to the greengrocer that's 5 mins walk from waitrose, it's a fraction of the price. She does it for a few weeks, then goes back to waitrose. Does the dog get dogfood? Nope she buys a bleeding cooked chicken from Waitrose for 6 quid.
£200 on food per week?! Bloody hell.

And a Waitrose chicken for the dog... ...my dog's lucky if he gets a stray bit of cucumber or the occasional steak fat.
That's for her, 3 cats, 1 dog.

& as for the rest of what is spent in a week....... I simply cannot comprehend how it is possible to spend so much.

I'm surprised, I'd have thought a woman with her own career (especially relatively low paying teacher) would be more sensible/have her head screwed on right.

Is her social circle also made up of teachers or other more affluent women she's trying to keep up with?

23, Design Engineer, on £31k.

My girlfriend is a Care Assistant on £14k. We have a joint account where our household expenses are taken from. I put more in than she does(it's only fair), but after 2 years I still can't drum into her that whatever is in the account is "our" money. She still runs it by me before she uses the card to buy food if she's out and about whistle

Between us our outgoings are low, and we just spend most of our money on holidays., however we're both still able to save.

I could work a lot harder than I currently do, or accept one of the higher paying, higher workload jobs I've been offered on occasion, but work-life balance is key for me. I like being able to spend time at home, with work at the back of my mind.

The amount of stories on here of guys out working their bks off, while their partner is just throwing the money away somewhere without a care in the world is eye opening.

£110k combined PA, as we're a team.

We're both going to 4 day weeks next year though, so pro rata that down to 80%.

More time for activities though.

I never get too worried about disclosing my salary to people, even when I was working in a supermarket/fast food joint.

Currently:
26
£30,000 PA
Manage to put £300-400 away per month
House share @ £450 p/m

I know that I spend too much on eating out as most social occasions involve food.

Own my Fiesta outright, nothing flash.

Taking a slight pay cut from next month to move my career in the way I want it to go, hoping its the sensible choice!

32, just set up my own company. Based on the first quarter trading, salary works out to about £50k. By this time next year, I should be earning about £80k. When I did the exact same job for someone else, I was earning about £37k/year.

Fiancee is 31, earns about £65k/year, next year that's projected to be £77k,

No dependents, just a Golden Retriever. Monthly outgoings are about £1,500 combined through a joint account. Add £250 each to a second joint account for spending on food etc. Everything else is ours to spend/save/look at admiringly as a number on a screen.

For some reason though, neither of us are capable of going to Booths without spending £40. No idea how that happens.

I'm 45 and earn around 40K. Live in Devon.

My wife used to earn a lot more as she was a partner in an accountancy firm, but left due to various reasons and works for herself. She probably earns a bit more than me now.

We've paid off the mortgage and are aiming for retirement now (no kids). Have a very nice life to be honest and don't want for anything.

This is the crux, buying "stuff" gives an immediate shot of joy from whatever unhappiness they are going through.

95% of the time my wife doesn't do it, but over the last 20yrs she has gone through period (s) of mild depression where the wardrobe quickly fills up biggrin Thankfully she's wise enough now and usually it gets taken back the next week.

Take it as a warning sign.

I’m technically self employed as I’m a partner in an accounting firm. Yes that’s a year.

If you don’t mind me asking, from your pay level I assume that you’re getting towards your firm’s retirement age? My wife has just started her third year of being a Big 4 partner and will earn a little less than half as much as you this year, and as I understand it partner income is weighted towards the later years of being partner. In her firm they have to retire at 55, and I guess it’s similar with the others. It’s difficult for her to get an idea of how it all works as the firm’s profit share system is all rather secretive at the moment!

Re the thread - I earn nothing as I’m a stay-at-home dad smile
