It's essentially been wonderful here in NL for the last 3 weeks. Just the odd off day here and there. 20-30c, clear skies, and about 15c at night.

Some decent storms moved through yesterday... Just up the road in Moenchengladbach, this happened:

That's quite a beast redface

I know the Austrian Alps has received some snow this week - so I'm going to guess that maybe Germany saw similar conditions to the American Plains which allowed for tornado formation (cold air rolls down from the mountains and meets the warm air).

Cracking week of sunshine next week. Might be a minor blip early in the week, but a quick return to sun and warmth after.

What. A. Weekend.... (weather-wise!).

Pattern continues, high pressure over Scandinavia brings a weak easterly and some warm but not hot weather. Occasional thunder from the continent is possible in the South.

Atlantic weather makes enough nuisance of itself for Ireland/NI and NW Scotland. Could be really quite dreary for them.

Edit - no reason, at this point, to believe that the bank holiday weekend will be anything but a continuation. Anyone heading to the Med (like me!), weather should be pleasant enough, even though there's no high pressure. Importantly, there's not much low pressure there either! The Atlantic is well and truly blocked.

Charts continue to show settled, and now increasingly warmer (and more thundery) conditions developing. There is no end in sight to this... at present...

Is there anything to suggest some swell coming our way?

And do you know how long it takes for an Atlantic storm to affect our side? I'm trying to work out whether we're likely to see anything interesting next week. (Of course I'll just look on magicseaweed on Friday, but it's nice to get a long term view.)

Increasing signs of heat, humidity and thunder - starting at the weekend.

If you haven't booked to go to Devon and Cornwall yet for half time - it wouldn't be a bad place to go!

Are you telling me that I am responsible for this drought ? And worse, it is likely to continue?
Pray for thunder...

c) Something else
Those of you with keen eyes will have noticed that I tipped the wink to this weather pattern back in April. Quite simply it's a continuation of the blocked Atlantic pattern caused by the Sudden Stratospheric Warming towards the end of winter (aided by La Nina, I believe). This warming wind from the East is a 'Beast from the East' in another guise. The East is now warm, so we're warm.

At some point the pattern will end, and the Atlantic will power up again, so let's enjoy it while it's heading off to Iceland instead biggrin

Potential for biggish storms tomorrow. Coming from Kent/Essex and heading WSW. Starting late in the day and lasting well into night. Update in the morning.

This morning's low cloud will clear for most by lunchtime. NE coast may well stay dreary, as usual in such conditions!

We are now entering a period of heavier thundery activity. Still trying to details on tonight (kind of appeared from nowhere yesterday).

Then a trough will bring big storms Thursday to Friday, moving northwards. Probably NE areas of England.

Temps rise over the weekend with unstable and hot/humid air from the continent. Widespread heavy thunder likely. I'll be flying to Italy on Sunday, so will struggle to update!

My kids are doing a mountain bike race Sunday morning on the top of a hill in the New Forest.. BBC weather predicts a holocaust of thunder storms. Met office somewhat less dramatic. I'm hoping for the latter.
As always, tricky to forecast more than a day out. The scenario appearing is ripe for thunder though.

Keep an eye on this twitter account - they are really very good at predicting which areas will get it worse: https://twitter.com/convectivewx

On the day, gotta keep an eye on the radar, storms can be very hit or miss: https://www.netweather.tv/live-weather/radar (there's a switch for lightning).

Yes the BBC forecast is a lot worse than Met Office for the BH weekend. BBC used to use the Met Office, so what happened? They've been quite poor lately so I'm hoping they are wrong!
BBC dropped MetOffice, it's due to the unique way they are funded.... They found it more important to pay men higher wages than women than to pay for a decent weather service...
