Caving, potholing, claustrophobia, etc
Discussion
Just reading this thread is hard work for me...
I have always been claustrophobic (Probably because i am a twin, so i had to share a small space for the first nine months with someone else and i was a breach birth as well. my first experience of getting stuck).![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)
About 3 or 4 years ago i was running an MZ motorcycle as a commuter. Because it was a two stroke it had a separate oil tank. I once stuck my finger in the tank to see how much oil was in it, i couldn't see properly because someone had painted it. Predictably i got my finger stuck and in the few minutes that it took to free it i could feel the scream rising inside me . I eventually pulled it out so hard that i took a lot of skin off, but the relief was immense.
I can't get in a lift, luckily i never have to.
I went to the Charity Race Day at Snetterton a couple of years ago and chose an open car, i was strapped in so tight that i was at a near panic by the time the car pulled away, after that i was fine.
Probably my worst experience lately was having a C.A.T Scan a couple of months ago.
I lay down and as soon as my head got in i lost the plot, so out i came. The very calm nurse put a moist cloth over my eyes and we tried again. I got through the ordeal by alternatively swearing and pretending i was just lying in the bath.
I have never had a problem wearing a full face crash helmet though...

Here's a question: has anyone perfected a mental technique for calming yourself in enclosed panic situations like this?

How much does it take to get used to it?!
You never do, you just become better at controlling your fear. Or something like that, I read it in a book.

Is that guy in the process of being rescued?

Wondering if there's also a correlation between those hating potholing / cave diving and those who wish to be cremated vs buried?
I went caving when I was younger and had just joined Explorer Scouts. Everyone else raved about it and, as someone who enjoys outdoorsy stuff, I thought it'd be a laugh so gave it a go.
I've no desire to ever do it again. I've never felt claustrophobia before but it was horrible. I can't see how anyone can find it fun - spending time underground feeling trapped, with little air and staring at the arse of the person in front of you. I was so glad to be back in the open afterwards.
