Back in the 70's our company rulebook required Gentlemen to wear "Suits, shirt, collar and tie and conventional footwear" while ladies could wear "suitable office dress". When the Sex Discrimination Act came into force this of course had to be the same for all staff, ie "suitable office dress"..

Our Area Manager sent a memo round stating, "In case any male members of staff are wondering what constitutes 'suitable office dress'.it means that gentlemen will wear "Suits, shirt, collar and tie and conventional footwear". On one particularly hot day (1976?) in an office without aircon, he instructed that gentlemen could "loosen their collars"!
Same period, gentlemen in our office were allowed to remove their jackets in hot weather. But not if they were wearing a three piece suit, unless they also removed the waistcoat, because the manager decreed that 'it made the place look like a pool room'. Loosening of collars definitely not encouraged!

I'm too old to get over the stigma of a bloke wearing a dress or skirt, I guess this is what I picture.

But I'd be delighted if attitudes changed and my kids thought nothing of wearing a tutu to the office on a hot day.

I know a chap who regularly wears a mini skirt in summer, first time I saw him I asked where he bought it from, he said Next, I thought there'd be a specialist men skirt shop.

Saw him this summer at a weekend cycle race meet where we'd camped over, he offered a cup of coffee in the morning, and promptly squatted in front of his camping stove skirt open and his tackle out, he wasn't bothered, I was!

I still would wear one though, but with underwear, I couldn't stand the humiliation of being laughed at biggrin, although I have worn a kilt on a few occasions nae knickers, but they're long enough to cover all as long as you don't fall over on yer back.

I'm almost always in shorts even in winter (with the exception of work and going to certain places/events) so more than likely would have if they weren't seen as gender specific

Why would anyone willingly wear a skirt. Trousers are far more sensible. No idea why women use them. I have some idea why the scots use them because they are pushing hard for a separate identity and that's the best they can come up with.

The only reason I would wear a skirt would be some daft ceremony where it meant more to the people in charge of the ceremony than it did to me.

For any other occasion I couldn't think of a single reasons to drape a bit of material around my waist that gave no protection to the elements and would flap about everywhere getting caught in things and general making me look like one of the attention economy wannabes.

Don't see it at all I'm afraid

I had an employee, typical rugby player build, two metres tall, he turned up for work in my Ormskirk office in the tiniest pair of pale pink and shiny hot pants, in terms of size, smaller and tighter than any boxers that I have worn.

When asked why, his answer was that it was a hot day.

What he wore was up to him, skirt or hot pants, Bermuda shorts, plus fours, tartan golf trousers etc.

I went to a wedding in Scotland, kilts were compulsory for men.

There were about 70 men, admittedly many needed urgent lessons on how to keep your knees together when sitting but all reported that the women couldn't resist having wayward hands when on the dance floor.

Decide for yourself if that is a plus or minus to wearing a skirt.
At my wedding in Glasgow, only the best man and I wore kilts none of the Scottish men did!
Although I didn't go commando as I knew my new wife would not be able to resist trying to hike it up on the dancefloor

Is that image a spoof? Ffs I know Hollywood is woke and Jim’s a bit mental lately but wtf does he think he’s doing?

To be honest I probably would if my wife put the right sized one out, and I wouldn't notice until I got to work.

But not on purpose, no.

I thought it fitted in well with the level of seriousness of the original poster?

Most of us make a skirt when we wrap a towel around our waist after a shower at home or the gym etc...we wear dressing "gowns" as well without a second thought, I'm not adverse to choosing a women's out door jacket if the sizing is better, often they are more nipped in at the waist and I sometimes find men's jackets that fit me across the shoulders/back billow out across the waist.

But no I wouldn't wear a skirt or dress as I look better in trousers.

Think these might be a challenge when tackling the stairs at Stratford

As they look a bit tight to walk around in getmecoat

My man's is one of the pleated ones so a bit more movement. David Levy wore one at his wedding on Schitts Creek. It wasn't $460.

They do look more kilt like, but with well made kilt approaching £400, I guess the prices aren't bad. More celebrities are rocking the look. A$AP Rocky can't keep out of his, but he has the weather for it. I don't think most blokes want to worry about if they have any decent tights for work to go with a skirt, so it may not catch on instantly, as most will stick to shorts and jeans... but perhaps marketing them as knee length legless shorts could catch on? idea
