I am need of a gadget - so thought here a good place to check ?

I need an entry sensor to mount at the gate to trigger a buzzer or similar in the house - or even get Alexa to speak up.

I have one of these type things https://www.amazon.co.uk/Security-Wireless-Drivewa...

- but horrendously unreliable / triggers at certain angles of the sun etc.
If you have wifi coverage there then one of the cheap TPLink Tapo cameras might be worth a try.

It alerts on movement and you get a live feed on your phone. With an SD card you can even record every disturbance. Only £20-odd.

I have one pointing at my garage door in case it is inadvertently opened by a remote in a bag or pocket. Works very well.

It’s definitely a me problem. The issue is two fold really. We have the pond in the front so everything is drawn to that, in the day it’s ducks, cats, ruddy great pigeons and the like and at night foxes, more cats and badgers.
I’ve also got a very reactive terrier....

That last one posted you could set a voice as an alarm so god a week or so it was great until dog worked out voice meant activity out front. In the day he’d fly to the window but if he heard it at night he’d go nuts. Started having to turn it off at night then which kind of defeated the object.

I think the best thing that would work for me would be some kind of gate sensor that could alarm in the house when someone pushes the gate open, but from memory everything I found last time I looked needed a range much closer than the gate to the house.
I might have another look tomorrow and see if anything new is about.

Everything I can find though sounds an alarm at the gate when the sensors connection is broken, which is useless as I need the alarm to sound in the house.

I found a pool alarm that seemed to do what I needed but the buzzer had to be within about 50ft of the sensor so again no good. Ideally I could do with a sensor that sends a phone alert when the connection Is broken. Now I can find these, but they are all for indoor use.

Fifty MiniDiscs. I can use them, but that has to be frivolous in 2021?

I do feel there is a real gap in the market here. Something that can sound an alarm/chime in the house, send a signal to your phone, be waterproof, live outside and not create a bunch of false alarms... doesn't seem like there is anything available. It feels like the only 'hole' in my home security. Movement sensor ideally, but a gate sensor would do the job.

Would a standard open/closed window or door sensor not work? I have ring ones and they are all battery powered and can play a notification to Alexa/phone when triggered.
To be fair they are all indoor rated but it can't be impossible to make them waterproof.

I also use an outdoor camera to monitor access to my back passage (oooh mrs) that will trigger on movement.

Said exactly the same. It's strange it doesn't exist really. I wondered if there was some way I could protect the sensor from the elements but can't really think of a way to achieve it whilst maintaining the connection.
It's a simple, waterproof window/door sensor and it doesn't bloody exist.

You want something industrial then. Google door interlock and look for one which is IP rated. I.e

I have found something which claims to work outdoors, but needs a hub:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01CEZTUOU?pf_...

It looks like a sealed unit though and most of the reviews complain the 10 year battery life is nearer to 12 months, so passed on that one.
I did find this one though:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B085ZKFX44/ref...

There is a line of thought that a bit of well wrapped cling film will protect from the elements and to be fair I want it on a gate that is reasonably protected from the elements. Debating whether to give it a go....

I have a Ring doorbell and have to temove and charge the battery every 3 or 4 weeks.

PITA.

You can get a Ring Solar Panel, I've read very mixed reports on them though.

Might do for the others up thread, for me it needs to be a magnetic sensor on the gate as everything will set it off. As I type there are a pair of Canada Geese walking up and down the drive and two magpies having a scrap on the grass. In a normal house where none of this happens that would work wonderfully but trust me when I say this place is surreal some days....biggrin

Surprised you need a gate sensor in that case, when we had geese they'd make far more noise than any alarm if anyone got within 20 yards or so biggrin

Thankfully they don’t tend to stay long. Messy, noisy things. They always turn up this time of year for a few weeks. Trouble is they sit outside the front door and hiss at me every time I go out and trying to work in the garden with them is a nightmare.
