If you wouldn't mind, next time you pop in, could you quiz them on who makes their umbrellas and wallets? I would be very interested to see the mark up they charge for applying their name to them.
I wouldn't say the wallet is a crazy price (assuming it is made in England and from premium leather) but £450 for a brolly is a massive rip off. There are two Italian makers and three English makers who are generally regarded as being the best and supply a lot, if not all, of the 'high-end fashion' brands.
A solid stick made from non-exotic wood should really not be over £300.
Of course. Look at this one- it has a rather detailed eagle on it and the Jeffery West branding, but I definitely agree with you. No way should this be £450.I wouldn't say the wallet is a crazy price (assuming it is made in England and from premium leather) but £450 for a brolly is a massive rip off. Interesting. From what I can see on wooden and leather covered models, they appear well made but below the level of the top end makers who command similar prices, and often less. Whilst JW don't provide any photos of the brolly's construction you can see that the tips are plastic, whereas the better makers use metal. The one with the leather covered handle states it uses a steel Fox frame which may indicate they use Fox Umbrellas in Croydon, but I think it merely refers to design of the frame.
I see they refer to the rather ornate handles as silver, which if true, would certainly account for some of the cost but as they show you no hallmarks I am guessing it is at most silver plate, but more likely silver metal.
They are however, a lot better than I expected. Alexander McQueen ones are absolutely atrocious and £600! The difference between designer and maker.
Your knowledge about this topic is impressive. I know sod all about umbrellas, having never even owned a cheapo one. talking of Loakes anyone ordered from here before ?
www.afarleycountryattire.co.uk
they seem to be the cheapest for loakes and if you buy 2 pairs you get 10% off, 3 pairs 15%
There are several styles of Loakes. The ones you will encounter the most are the Design, Lifestyle and 1880 selection. The Design are made in India and tend to be fine, whereas the 1880 are made in England and are noticeably better quality. The Lifestyle is also made in India but is not welted (hence even cheaper than Design). www.afarleycountryattire.co.uk

Looking at them the prices seem fairly normal, though a few seem cheaper than elsewhere. I've not used that website before.
Edit to add: these are the boots I have- http://www.afarleycountryattire.co.uk/shop/loake-s...
I paid £30 more for them. Damn!

Not bought Loakes from here but have had 2 x Barkers and a pair of RM Williams + belt. Absolutely fine to deal with and like you say often offer decent savings against their list price (which seemed pretty reasonable already when I checked). www.afarleycountryattire.co.uk

The website, that box and most of their designs make me think that walking into their shop/factory would be like walking onto the set of Sweeney Todd!
I mentioned this story before, but when I did a tour around the Northants factory shops a few years ago, I had a look in the JW shop. Some of the stuff in there was absolutely crazy, like metallic purple pointy boots. Anyway, I wanted to ask about what they have in my size so I went to find a member of staff. I looked around and there was only 4 people in the room;a middle aged couple
a random, normal looking guy in his 20s
an extremely extravogant guy with neckerchief, cuban heel crazy boots, brightly coloured tight suit of some description, strutting around rearranging the shoes
I took my chances and approached the neckerchief guy to ask for help.
Turns out he was just a standard JW customer. The shop assistant was out of sight getting something from the store room
It was at that point I realised that JW probably isn't my style.

So here they are. First impressions, decent quality. Not quite Cheaney but not that far off. They seem the real deal (as per the website). Proper gw sole. Doesn't say where made however. Supplied in proper jw box complete with shoe bags. The bags are relatively cheap feeling tbh, certainly when compared to those supplied by Cheaney or Charles Tyrwhitt.
(Apologies if images rotated. Blame the uploader).
Relative size to other shoes. The plain brogues are 8.5. The two tones are 9. The JW are 8.5
Socks for PH.
I'll think about them. I'm around a 9. My left foot is a bit bigger than the right. 9s were too big. 8.5 about spot on for the left, right side is borderline. Jw site actually suggests downsizing by half.

I wondered what you'd wear them with, It hadn't occurred to me it would be shorts.
Who said anything about shorts? We already ascertained the best way to wear JW shoes:

Obvs I'd wear socks as well, I'm not a savage. If they were loafers, perhaps a different story.FreeLitres said:
