Back in the early 1970's in Northumberland (not far from Alnwick) everyone had coal fires. To draw the fire you would have what looked like a metal shield that would be used to make the fire burn harder, sometimes people would add a sheep of newspaper to cover and gaps to make it draw harder, you had to watch the paper because when it started to turn Brown it was just about to catch fire its self.
