am i right in interpreting that he said "i'm done" to mean that he isn't going to give it another go to try and get the freefall record too?
I maybe right in thinking that unless he has a wing suit on he is never getting that record as he hasnt the distance to fall as he is going too fast.Du1point8 said:

According to the Guinness Book of Records, Eugene Andreev (USSR) holds the official FAI record for the longest free-fall parachute jump after falling for 80,380 ft (24,500 m) from an altitude of 83,523 ft (25,458 m) near the city of Saratov, Russia on November 1, 1962. Although later on jumpers would ascend higher altitudes, Andreev's record was set without the use of a drogue chute during the jump and therefore remains the longest genuine free fall record.[3]

I was meaning this one:
Baumgartner was in free fall for 4 minutes and 19 seconds, 17 seconds shy of mentor Joseph Kittinger's 1960 jump. Felix was moving too fast to get the extra 17 seconds.

I thought he opened his parachute earlier as he couldn't see his instruments/horizon/whatever due to visor problems?el stovey said:

Baumgartner broke the records for highest free fall, highest helium man balloon flight, and for the fastest free fallAndreev's record for longest free fall was not broken and he 'only' jumped from 83,000 ft.

But it's pretty much two completely different records isn't it.. I guess if Felix had jumped but went belly down rather than head first, with a drogue chute too, he probably would have got the longest record.. But missed out on the speed one.
Yeah I think that's what started all this debate, i was suggesting that might be the record he goes for next. I'm not sure I understand the wiki WRT to these records
It says Andreyev broke Kittingers record. But also states that Kittinger used a drogue and fell from higher
How can it be the same record if it was done under different conditions? You can’t retrospectively say it doesn’t count because he used a drogue surely?
No time is given for Andreyevs free fall but I’ve only ever seen Felix's time rather than distance.

128,097 feet, to the moment he opened his ripcord — at 8251 feet above sea level. The total free fall distance — 119,846 feet
Thats nearly 40,000 more feet than the one you mention.

A very rough calculation of mine works out that to carry on for another 20 secs or so in order to beat the record, he would have had to pull his chute at around a 1000ft
He's deployed lower http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-PsviSStA8(Caution: awesome 80's action movie soundtrack)
Love the nuttiness of this bunch too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnz0hsKaqUQ

I assume that's because there's two different records for longest freefall. One for time, the other for distance. It says Andreyev broke Kittingers record. But also states that Kittinger used a drogue and fell from higher

Baumgartner obviously broke the distance record but missed out on the other one as he pulled his chute early.

Yes, and no.He would never have made the freefall time AND the speed record from what I can see. In trading speed over time - the 833mph put paid to any opportunity to hit both records, even if he had pulled at 2000ft.

Ah right sorry, you're correct. Are you saying that he didn't have enough seconds left to wait to beat the record? He would never have made the freefall time AND the speed record from what I can see.
