Bats see in the dark by sonar. Hence he's locating the ships by using sonar (as a submarine would) to the frustration of the rat.

Sonar wouldnt permiate a solid object but

I like how how the key concern here is whether sonar can permiate a solid object, rather than whether a bat and a mouse can play battleships.

My guess is the person who wrote it just didn't know thier status codes very well, seems like it should have been a 503 anyway.
