Bit of a lurker on this thread - think I have commented a couple of years back when I got my yellow indoor specials.

I'd appreciate some help. The other night my wife, who never comments on these things, saw someone on TV wearing what I think were red Nike Cortez and commented how nice they were. With Anniversary and birthday coming up this seemed to be an easy win, except they don't appear to be available.

Any ideas where to source, or the next closest thing?

I really like the Cortez! For an old design they're still very comfortable, but in my experience I'd be wary of the quality. The nylon pair I owned split right at the ball of the foot on both shoes. I'd buy another pair though in hindsight I'd suggest half a size up from the usual. The silhouette is a bit different by modern standards though with a really short, stubby toebox.

First time I've seen anyone refer to the Cortez as an orthopaedic shoe.

Quite a few brands have trainers in a very similar design. It's a classic, imo.

Very likely it’s just that image, the tall stubby nose looks like those black shoes the kid with the club foot wore at school.

I still wear a 30 year anniversary pair of Cortez. They have 72 and 02 on the heels. I'm hoping they bring out some more for their 40 year anniversary next year.

I'd be looking at gold to match the 3 stripes. Or white/cream to match the midsole.

I love a cortez but they make me stumble
For some reason I catch the toe on carpet every now and then - not a good look.

There was a thread on CT once where someone asked if it happens to anyone else, with loads of responses. It answered a secret we were afraid to share
