My brother recently got a JD zippo which grabbed my attention.

Bought one of these about 10 years ago on a school trip:

Parents relieved me of it as I couldn't be trusted..! Will have to ask them where they hid it!

Fancy collecting a few so have bought a spectrum and download fest version. Also looking at a couple on the bay.
That one is really cool, seems to be one of the newer shaped ones?

When you say spectrum do you mean the brass spectrum one? I have one too, bit scared of taking it out in case I mark it though spin

excuse the crap pics but here's mine, front and back:

as with all vietnam lighters there's no way of proving it is genuine but in it's favour is that this is the only one i've seen with the same design [though the 'no hope...' is derivative] and the case and interior are period correct, with fantastic patina.

the original interior parts were knackered so it has a later one whic hdoesn;t quite fit. the hinge is also getting quite loose as i've had it about 14yrs and used to do the old lighting it on your jeans thing when i was younger. i wonder if there's somewhere who could fit a period inner and give it a bit of TLC for me?

ps - like the 'day of the dead' one posted earlier, might have to buy one of those.
Zippo themselves will do it if you send it back with a letter explaining what you want. From what I have heard they can be very accommodating when it comes.to keeping their old products going. Just make sure you outline what you want when you send the shell to them, plus some contact details

Picked up another 'ice black' on amazon, quite cheap!
I've got one of those, I really like it but I'm a little scared to use it too much incase I scratch it. I generally carry either my orange matte one or the white one day to day

They were having it under no circs in hand luggage and yes, with wadding etc removed and binned for the hold.

I'm still utterly confused as to how a small plastic cylinder of compressed, flammable gas is 'ok', but a bloody petrol lighter is a security risk. Mental.

Is this standard practice or is Germany just mental? As far as I can make out, the US seems ok with them?
Right, my mate has looked in to this further. It seems that Zippo's are cleared by the international air transport authority for transport on board aircraft even when fuelled. Just to get the whole picture on this he is going to speak to the airport's security team to get their stance on zippos's then report back to this thread when he has more information smile

He really wants to know why they took it off you.

That is actually legendary behaviour! I'm massively cheered by the fact that there are other people as obsessive about knowing 'why?' as I am in the world! smile

Just for clarity, München said 'nein' to allowing it in hand luggage and Nürnberg said 'nein' to allowing it in hold baggage without removing the wadding etc.

Hugely grateful to you and your chum as I'd love to know the exact rules on this as I hate how there seems to be no consistency here. If its a straight 'no' all along the line then fair enough; I'd leave it at home but it's a pest that some airports seem to randomly take umbrage to them.

I await his findings with interest and please send him an Internet beer from me.
Not a problem! It seems that the overall authority has no problem with them but maybe individual airports/countries are using their discretion against Zippo lighters. The why part is the real kicker as the bloke who is doing the investigation bit has carried fuelled zippo's all over the world on airlines with no problems. May just be the Germans being over sensitive?

Either way, we shall find out soon thumbup

biggrin I like those thumbup

Perhaps add some matte colour ones to the collection to brighten it up a bit? They're pretty cheap on Amazon...

biggrin

eta: Sorry Disastrous, no news yet. Will see my mate later and prompt him a bit.

Just remembered about this? Any word from your chum?
Sorry chap, I had forgotten and I suspect he had too. He has been recently promoted to a slightly different role so I imagine his time to "chase things up" has been reduced wink

I shall see him tonight/tomorrow and get back to you once I have had a word smile
