shirt]having read the 28DL thread and done lots of googling for the cathedral steps in my pre-Ph days i love this thread [besides the fight said:
. great work POD, particularly the pics.

i remember reading one article about an undergorund section accessible from deansgate. can't find it now but i think it may have been via the basement of kendals, and was large enough for delivery vans to use.

i used to live on tib st. which was the course of the dried up river tib. the river bed is apparently preserved and accessible but god knows where from.

i wouldn't mind a good look around the stockport air raid shelters - the full deal, not just the tour section.
The deansgate tunnel is between the Kendals buildings. Also under deansgate, runs the Manchester and Salford Junction Canal.

The River Tib is still there, its completely culverted now though.

I think I'll clean this article up a bit.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_Cathedral_...

I've already moved things around, and removed the nonsense about 'rumours of tunnels'.

I might just buy the Underground Manchester book.

You know, I reckon I can make a good guess at how they got in. It's either a rope over the wall, and abseil down the embankment to squeeze through an air vent.

Or:

Tell me, what would be the easiest way to someone who is experienced at climbing, to get across the river into the top of those arches...

They made it kind of obvious really, by posting on here:

...this picture:

Because I know exactly where that picture was taken. Greengate, here:

What would you be doing opposite the bridge in the top photograph, if you hadn't used that bridge to get over the river?

You don't need much to get there, the confluence of the Rivers Irk and Irwell is easily accessible.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&a...

You can get on your boat and row up the Irwell from the Ship Canal, just past the Cathedral Arches, and turn right. All it takes is a bit of rowing, really. I'd have a go myself if I had the slightest bit of inclination.

Not through the girders in the monochrome shot - that's a different set of bridges.

Now, if only this was in Liverpool I could go have a look. Any one know any sites worth exploring in Scouseland?
The elevated railway, for one.

i really doubt they'd have got in from the river. cctv around that area is ridiculous.
The river isn't lit, and who'd be watching the CCTV for climbers under the bridge at 1AM?

any idea about the water depth there?
Pretty shallow, no more than 4-6 feet I'd guess. Further upstream you can walk across the river.

I think you're all wrong.

They are generally a good bunch on there but they are rightly tired of people who just come along and say tell me how to get in xxxxx building.

They spend a lot of time and effort planning and figuring out how to get in these locations so all they usually ask is that if you're serious about exploring you do some of your own work and also participate in the community rather than just asking often as we've seen here very rudely how to obtain access. If you prove yourself in the community and as decent person who isn't going to wreck the place or cause problems for other explorers, you'll find they are very open with the information.

Some of the posters on here as far worse than any elitism you may perceive them as showing.
bks. All I did was ask where it was, and when I became more interested, they banned me. They're jealous little fktards who think that they, and they alone, should have the right to trespass on other people's land. I created a Wikipedia article on the location, which they then set about vandalising.
