Most would precess over and come down miles away except they probably have been fitted with a self-destruct unit which will activate after a set time. If they go perfectly upwards they will come down base first until the SDU takes effect.

Mythbusters did an episode on that.

Yes but thats not real, that new US Military combat shotgun the AA 12 actaully fires 12 gauge grenade rounds on full Auto that explode after they pass through the surface of the target.
