Does anyone have any recommendations as to the best way to learn a new language? I'd like to learn Spanish just have no real idea where to start?
The best way to learn a new language is to immerse yourself in it as much as you can. Hang out with people who speak it, try out words and phrases on them. Here's a good website where you can converse with Spanish people:
www.sharedtalk.com
As a native speaker of English you will be very sought after there!

And you don't need to know any Spanish to go there. People will be happy to chat to you in English, but they will also gladly help you with any Spanish queries you may have. Here's a good website where you can converse with Spanish people:

Immersion is certainly a good way of learning a language. Focus on "thinking" in the language rather than translating from English to Spanish. Michel Thomas' CDs are very good for this.
Sounds like the kind of thing I'm looking for. is it for all levels of learning? Absolutely no barrier whatsoever, he starts right from the beginning, and by the end of the first CD, you'll have learned more than you would in a year of secondary school education.
There's normally 8 CDs in a full set (or a 'starter' version with just two), then a couple of 'language builder' sets with a couple more CDs each.
His method of teaching really is very good. No pens, no paper, just concentrate and listen.
The only problem with this, is you can't really do it in the car, as you do need to focus on what he's saying. I tried doing the Spanish one on my iPod when I was painting the living room, but found I got half way through and simply hadn't listened to half of it. It works best with a quiet room, no distractions, sit down, and concentrate. Thirty minutes a time, five times a week, within a month you'll be flying.

Happy to do either. With my job a drive for a few hours a day so maybe something with an audio format I can use in my van.
I've done this, and you really have to stick to it. It's only the basics though, but saying goodnight and ask for the toilet is a good start imho.Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
