Tomorrow I shall surely announce that I'm a millionairre, for I received an email from the national lottery which said:
"Your National Lottery Prize will be paid to your registered bank Account shortly."

It's after midnight. I'd forgotten that I had a direct debit set up, iirc a pound a week. It's half past my bed time, I can't access the site. No idea what I've won.

Once or twice I asked for a scratch card, after 8pm, they can't be sold after 8pm, I was told.

True enough, the majority of my maniac beer drinking is done past 8pm, I am more likely to run into a supermarket with a grand in cash and buy 1000 scratch cards before vomiting in a pick and mix sweets dispenser, and falling backwards into a freezer compartment of peppered herring and auntie Bessie's Yorkshire puddings... So are we all. After 8pm. More likely than before 8pm.

I understand why national lottery tickets can't be bought after 8pm on a Saturday, it's when the draw occurs, some time around then... But why can't one buy a scratch card after 8pm. Camelot is government owned, isn't it? It's about making "gambling" available during sensible hours... Am I close?

Anyhow, I received the "you have won something" type email, only to arrive on the National Labotomy website, and get this:
"We're very sorry, game play is currently closed on the site. Please try again later."

Same thing again, I presume - and one can't access the site after 8pm?

My second question, to kill two birds with one torque wrench, also involves time. I'll admit to watching 3 series of big brother. Years ago. Would finish work, be up late, TV on in the background. Then I'd sit down and watch the live cam of them snoring in their beds for a bit (wondering why I bothered)... The sound in big brother would be on for 10 minutes, then off for ten minutes, or something like that.

It's been a long time, but (at the time) I remember thinking... How strange. I may be wrong, but wasn't there a disclaimer or statement which acknowledged this fact? Why was sound not allowed after 8pm, in ten minute intervals?

If the people who run the lottery and Big brother production company are vampires and need to pop out to feed after 8pm, fair enough. Can't they just say so?

I don't see other people's websites shrivelling up like a pair of testicles in ice cold water and displaying a "go away, come back after sunrise" type message, after 8.

Unless the lottery website is down. I'm guessing its the 8pm thing though.

Sounds like its down for maintenance

You can generally go on it & log in at any time of day/night just not purchase tickets for that particular draw after a certain time

In a supermarket, it's 7:30pm cut off due to the machines having a hissy fit around that time with all the other lotto games but they open up around 8pm I think, but the one about scratchcards is strange, what shop was it?

Tesco Petrolium fuel filling station, aka tesco express. I go there as there are no freezers large enough to fall into.

The scratch cards are definitely not available after 8. Or the girl behind the counter just doesn't like me. I'll slap her with the leafy green ends of a bunch of carrots next time I roll in, to get to the bottom of the matter without any of that silly "hello" banter.

"If you lie to me, I'll get you my pretty, and your little dog Toto too!"

I didn't realise the Nat lottery tickets opened at 8. But the scratch cards definitely close down then. My best guess was an initiative on responsible gambling.

National Lottery closes at 7pm IIRC until well after the draw

Never heard of scratchcards not being allowed to be sold, Google doesn't know about that either

Scratchcard thing seems strange to me Mobsta. Shop assistant misinformed regarding lottery purchase maybe?

When I was taxi driving it was common to pick up pissheads at 3am.
Often ask to head home via the 24hr garage for fags, pot noodles etc and saw many get back in car with scratchcards.

I don't buy national lottery tickets over the counter so am a bit off with my timing. 7pm then. Or 7.30 according to another pher. What I didn't realise was that they started again after 8.

But I am sure the sophisticated computerised plastic box dispenser the cards are kept in catches the millennium bug virus thingy at 8pm. You can casually ask for a 1pound card next time you pop in for milk and bread. They will probably tell you it's closed down. If google doesn't know, then it's a mystery, like an episode of scooby doo. Pinch the girl on her nose and try to pull her mask off. It'll be old man Smithers from the abandoned gold mine on the grave yard shift, keeping the scratch cards for himself.

"Why if it wasn't for you meddling PHers, I'd have gotten away with it too!!"

the scratchcard thing will be because they have reconciled their figures to save time later. (God knows why its a 2 minute job)and they can't be bothered to alter the figures.
