Do you need planning permission and building control to do this?

Ooooh I was wondering the same thing.

I did a half arsed (~30 second) search of the planning portal in Stamford where I believe he lives to see if anything came up. Couldn't see anything, maybe someone more familiar with such things could have a better look. I imagine there are ways of hiding such things from nosey people like me?

I do wonder what his neighbours must think, the disruption caused by him building that massive bunker must have been fairly substancial.

No doubt he works hard behind the scenes to keep them sweet otherwise you'd hear about it in the local paper etc.

He had planning and BC for the bunker, I'm pretty sure, so I'd imagine so.

The bunker was done right before a big housing development was built past his back fence so I imagine they’ve had a lot of noise and disruption from that.

There’s BC for the bunker (as a “bomb shelter”), can’t see you’d need planning for something underground and the sheds are within permitted development.

Think the planning for the bunker was done retrospectively, which would have been painful if was rejected. (There's a Q&A vid somewhere)

I just hope he doesn't injure himself.

I was genuinely concerned for his safety (despite his tie) when he dug a big hole in the sand on a beach a few years ago, as there didn't seem to be sufficient bracing against collapse.

I just hope he's going to be more careful this time, as a cave-in could literally kill him.

The application for the bunker is on the planning portal. I was sad enough to look for it when he said about the retrospective planning in an update video. I recall him saying something along the lines of that if he wanted to sell the house, he would have to sell it as a bunker with house included, but I may be wrong.

Thankfully it's a bit more than ply this time and it seems like that there isnt a huge volume above him now as you can see roots above him but it is worrying.

He seems to have some engineering/structural background.

I think he said Patreon members can get an early look at the finished project, so it's been completed, I'd think he'd not do it, edit videos and post them before completion anyway. So no obituaries in the Stamford Mercury.

Fair enough. It doesn't completely detract from my comment about safety though. smile

Here's the application, there's a building control certificate for the shelter listed in the additional information document: http://www.southkesteven.gov.uk/index.aspx?article...

The exact same thought occurred to me. This one did look sketchy at times even by his standards!

Do you honestly think he did this without a strructural/geotech engineer's input? Not a chance.

Exactly, he must have plenty of money for that.
He has gone down to the rock and is using that as support - presumably it would be easier to go over that but there must be logic behind his depth.

Seriously, no. He's barely made ends meet until relatively recently. Loaded he is not.

He lives in a relatively modest house in a modest area but has a massive YouTube following since 2016 and before. So depends what you mean by recently. He does his own editing etc I think so I would guess he’s been a millionaire for a good 5 years.

This tunnel build is pretty foo£ing cool.

I think you massively misunderstand how the internet works and how much people expect for free

Well, at least we can agree on that
