Star Trek Discussion

I thought I'd start a general Star Trek thread as the programme specific threads tend to wander off to other series, I'm certainly guilty of that.
I've just found Rowan J Coleman's YouTube channel, which I'm currently a little bit addicted to having finally watched DS9 over the last couple of months, I only put it off for about 25 years. Like many I struggled with the concept of a Trek series based in a static location.
It really does get going in the third series with the introduction of the Dominion and stays strong from there out. Although Berman should be charged with a criminal offense for effectively sacking Jadzia at the end of Series 6.
I was also surprised to find out that the opening episode Emissary cost $12m to make, $21.5m in today's money.

I’m currently five episodes from completing Voyager having completely missed it back in the day, it’s been a (mainly) good time.
Of all the ST output my personal favourites are the original cast movies - they really gave the original team room to breathe and 2-4, the “trilogy”, are just fantastic.
Haven’t bothered with Picard, but the latest series could be worth a watch. Discovery started off dreadful and I gave up. Brave New Worlds has, for me, been pretty good.

Until a year ago I think the Dominion war story arc in DS9 was peak modern ST.
I never really warmed to STV: Neelix, Naomi Wildman, Harry Kim and a good few others all deserved to be in unfortunate transporter accidents. In some cases more than once, just to be sure.
Enterprise was, well, just a bit of a chore with a terrible ending. Discovery rather badly rewrites canon with the spore drive.
The TNG films are a bit hit and miss; First Contact is the stand out and the rest are a bit laboured.
The Kelvin timeline films are frankly bloody awful, deserving of the bin. Whatever they are, they aren’t ST.
However, Picard (esp S3) and ST:STW both really hit the spot. Proper old school ST, esp STW.

On one of the Channel 4 channels they showed all the original then Next Gen movies one a night over 2 weeks or whateverI never really warmed to STV: Neelix, Naomi Wildman, Harry Kim and a good few others all deserved to be in unfortunate transporter accidents. It reminded me how good they are, or at the least how watchable they all are.
T.O.S - Good in a few places, others dross.
T.N.G - Good in a lot of places, others dross.
Movies: TOS cast: Not too shabby. TNG cast: Fine except for *that* one. The new lot: First one good, the rest dross.
Everything else: Not interested, and I had really high hopes for Star Trek: Picard

Recently finished binge watching Strange New Worlds having heard good things, and really enjoyed it. Feels like proper Star Trek, and you end up really caring about the characters. Under The Cloak of War is an absolutely outstanding episode and I wouldn't begrudge anyone putting it in their top 5 of the whole franchise.
I love Star Trek!
TOS is obviously very dated now, but I still enjoy some episodes, even though I mostly laugh at them.
Loved TNG and Voyager. Getting into DS9, that seems to improve with the arrival of the mighty Defiant.
I also thought very highly of Enterprise, IMO was a shame it was cut short.
Enjoyed all the movies barring perhaps the Original Motion Picture - just a little to old for me. Wrath of Khan onwards very good.
In fact, got to watch Wrath of Khan at the cimema a year or two ago. Was great on the big screen

I've been working my way through all the old series' over the past couple of years. Started with TOS which I had to force my way through, and I'm currently on the final season of TNG and half way through SNW. After this it's onto the films.
Thoughts:
TOS - Drags on and looks dated. No real ending to the series.
Voyager - Had some good moments, but got too focused on 7of9. Poor choice of characters.
DS9 - Underated. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Great characters.
TNG - The benchmark.
Enterprise - Drags on but worth a watch. Even if it's only for Jolene Blalock.
Discovery - So much potential, yet ruined by leftist ideology. Didn't even bother watching the final season.
Picard - Started off well, turned to s
t, but came together in season 3. Why do they give jurate the most ridiculous name for an American to say? It rolls off their tongues in a way that you have no idea how it's spelt.
Lower decks - An easy watch for the times you just want to switch off.
SNW - Back on form as per TNG. Looking good so far.
