Why is the concept so hard to understand?
You interview a candidate. What they look like has no relevance to how well they will do the job that you are advertising.
Would you also discriminate against a tattooed person? Someone with facial piercings? Someone with visible birth-marks? An amputee?
If we assume no to those questions...
Why are you discriminating against something that is so easily changed?

I'm really not answering that.

OK let me spell it out to you.
I have a job available, standard office type job, it is not working in a clothes shop or manual labour
You supposedly want it
No one ever failed to get a job for wearing a suit to an interview for such a job
Ergo if you wear jeans either you don't give a toss about this job or you are thick, or someone who thinks it's what is inside that really matters man, not the skin or the clothes
Regardless you can fk off and go and work for Levis or Greenpeace

Bigtee: No you cannot have the job.
Over Qualified Interviewee: Please may I ask why?
Bigtee: Because you wear jeans.
Over Qualified Interviewee: Thanks very much for your time and I may well have made your company a lot of money had you given me the chance and not been so deeply rooted inside your own anus, but in the advertisement i must have missed the part where you state the dress code for this 16k a year job.
Bigtee: I`m the clever guy around here, although I would never be able to get a job if i did not wear trousers because thats just how it is in my tiny minded world.
Im tiny minded and deeply routed inside my own anus because i want people to be smartly dressed at an interview? are you serious? really? Over Qualified Interviewee: Please may I ask why?

No wonder unemployment is at its all time high.

So in summary: perhaps in the original advertisement you should put must be of "smart appearance" or "must be suited" or "expected to be well dressed2 or similar.
This way you will not be wasting other peoples time as well as your own by blindly sending people away due to their attire not being acceptable in your eyes.
If you are the one having to write the ads and you are having to waste your own time by sending people away due to wearing jeans i would suggest you are not doing your job properly.

Why should i tell people to be smart when coming for an interview.

I agree with BigTee. I would never turn up for an interview without atleast trousers, a shirt and a tie. Even if it was for Mcdonalds. I wouldn't expect to get the job if I turned up in anything else.
PS. I'm in Stoke, being made redundant and have a lot of retail sales/customer service experience if it's of any interest?

No its not obvious, and at no point has the OP said that.
If it is his 1st test then fair enough if he is happy to waste everyones time for it, but come on, he has at no point said that he is testing people in this way, he has just said he finds it astonishing that people are not aware of his anal dress code.
looking smart at an interview is anal?If it is his 1st test then fair enough if he is happy to waste everyones time for it, but come on, he has at no point said that he is testing people in this way, he has just said he finds it astonishing that people are not aware of his anal dress code.

Question if I may.
I have always been one for smart dress at an interview, I have a suit that I rarely wear, it's one of those skirt or trouser ones, so which is worn does depend on the job role, and always with smart shoes.
But, I treated myself to a small silver stud in my nose for my birthday, would you all count this against me, if that was the only 'off' thing about my appearance on the day?
I dont have a problem with nose or eye brow studs. I have always been one for smart dress at an interview, I have a suit that I rarely wear, it's one of those skirt or trouser ones, so which is worn does depend on the job role, and always with smart shoes.

I simply want people to make an effort for an interview!!
Wearing the same as you would wear in the pub is a no no for me!
I have a guy who has tattoos over his neck and behind his ear, if i dont wear a tie - you would see my tattoos on my neck. But my guy looked very smart on his interview and i would also wear a tie if i conduct interviews as i am also being interviewed by the interviewee and need to make a good impression!!
