Help, incoming lurgy- Products to fend off?
Discussion
From a friend of my mother's.
Old country lady's chill cure all.
Juice of lemon and/or juice of lime
Nutmeg
Mixed spice
Honey
Hot water
Put 2 or 3 teaspoons of honey into a 1/2 pint glass.
Add sufficient boiling water to fully dissolve the honey.
Add lemon and lime juice.
Taste and add honey if req'd to sweeten.
Add small pinch of grated nutmeg (ideally fresh as its really the skin you want. Its a mild euphoric, allegedly).
Add small pinch of mixed spice.
Top up with mixture of hot & cold water so its still a hot drink.
Stir and drink quickly, in two or three mouthfuls. Stirring between drinks to keep all the spices and nutmeg mixed and not allowing them to settle.
Take paracetamol too.
Late in the evening add extra honey and a long splash of scotch.
Jobs a good 'un.
I've taken it for years, whenever you get that little niggle that something is not quite all good in your throat/sinus' etc.

Folks,
A number of my colleagues have a cold/sore throat/general lurgy. I can feel it starting to come on in my throat.
I'm not sure what's going on but I've not felt 100% for about 3 weeks, mainly with sore throat but also got light flu symptoms in the middle of it.A number of my colleagues have a cold/sore throat/general lurgy. I can feel it starting to come on in my throat.
My grandaughter has just started nursery and hand, foot and mouth (which I'd never heard of before) is apparently rife at the moment and reading up on it it seems that often manifests itself in adults as a sore throat.
Good stuff, just got some of the Vicks First Defence and will try the old favourite of honey and lemon drink too.
It's very much needed, I'm now 3 days and about 36hrs into a 7-day week of shifts. Reckon the rest will be longer and more stressful so the £7.50 on drugs might be a good investment.
No nutmeg in the house sadly!

My Grandmother, who was an old lady, (lived in the city though) used to have honey and lime juice ready mixed for the first sign of a sniffle from one of us kids. Honey is supposed to have an antibiotic effect and the lime juice has vitamin C so maybe there is something to it.

How it works :
http://www.askdrvicks.com.au/first-defence.htm
When I was constantly training to keep fit for sport, I seemed to also continuously get colds and sniffles. According to Sports Nutritionists and my Doc, this is because lots of training actually batters the body's immune systems too - so if you're fit, you're also more prone to infections - go figure! How it works :

Anyway, I was recommended the First Defence above - and by jove, it's always worked for me. Every time I've left the sniffles come on or had that tell-tale metallic taste in the back of my throat, a load of First Defence has staved off a full-blown cold. I haven't had a cold or Flu now for what - 10 years?
I also have a footballing friend, who's brother is a famous Premiership and ex-England player - apparently all the football guys swear by this too.
So give it a go!
Carry some of that alcohol hand cleaner gel stuff.
Cleanse hands many times a day, and every time you have handled anything the pox ridden colleagues have been near.
Every time you go to the bathroom, or the drinks machine, or share a keyboard.
Wear a paper mask.
Have a week off work.
Eat red hot curry every day, don't clean your teeth, and fart a lot, so people don't get too close.
All good ideas.

I've read that cold and flu viruses are more likely to take hold when your nose and throat membranes are dry, ie. air-conditioned offices in summer.
That Vick's stuff looks like just the ticket - I note it contains zinc, which is supposedly clinically proven to reduce the severity and duration of colds by binding to the viruses and stopping them replicating.
