My 4 year old daughter stubbed her toe really hard a week or so ago. Much to our amazement/fright/disgust it appears that the nail on her little toe is now about to fall off.

She thinks she is well cool. If it was me I would be huddled in a corner whimpering.

Question is, do nails grow back when they fall off?

As a boy, someone threw a stone at me, hit my finger. Under nail went all black, hospital lanced through the nail with a hot needle. Nail fell off and re grew. So in short, Yes.

Got a piece of grit stuck in my nail as a nipper. Tried to claw it out and took my full nail off instead.

Which was nice.

Crushed end of finger under dumbell at gym, looked like a sausage that'd spent too long on a bbq, nail off, bone showing etc.

Nail grew back.

Stupidly caught my finger on a moving alternator fan and my middle finger nail got ripped off. I had a gauze put over it and a bandage until it was well enough to heel on its own. It was a very painful, sickening experience.

I snapped my toenail off as a teenager.

Didn't hurt 'that' much and it grew back quite quickly. However it isn't smooth like my others, it has ridges, like a McCoys crisp.

Weird.

Got my fingers caught in a door as a kid and all the swelling, bleeding etc made the nails fall off. They all re-grew.

I had an ingrowning nail for 2 years, kept getting drugs which didnt work. Then a nice lady used to cut some of the nail off to stop it ingrowing for 2weeks for some pain relief.

I got fed up after 4 or so visits so went back to doctors said i want it out.

Fast forward best part of a month. Im called into the surgery, lie down, shoe and sock off. 2 MASSIVE needles to the bone either side of said nail to numb the pain. They give it 10 minutes.

Doctor seems to of mislaid his tools and picks up some plyers instead, he couldnt pull my nail out with thos... OH MY GOD he bloody is.

All i can feel is tearing and braking and tugging on my toe (making feel sick remembering), finally, POP. Nails off, but they are not finished!

Que scalpel, cuts some of the skin from the nail bed out, to stop it growning back on one side. Finally finished, need to take a week off work and litreally have my foot up all week. Had to shower with shopping bag on foot and redress every 4 hours due to bleeding.

Nail grows back, which it was ment to do, but this time leaning to the left as there is nothing on the other side for it to get set in. Yey, the other side is now ingrowing.

Go to the GP, say get rid of it for good. This time a more plesent experience. Needles hurt a bugger, but they worked this time as i asked the guy when he was starting and he showed me my nail. He covered my nail bed in silver nitrate (i think) and it's never grown back.

By the way, a nail grows about 1 CM under the skin where you cant see it. I also have pics if people want to see my nail, removed...

Also, when you loose a nail due to slamming it in something. Its usally the bit you can see not the extra bit under the skin. This is the bit that is most attached. And proberly why it grew back quickly. As my doctor explained.

I lost my big toenail after getting a blister under the nail during marathon. Was quite painful for a while and has taken about 9 months to fully grow back. I've lost other nails due to various accidents but they seemed to grow back a little quicker.

Have also had the same done on both big toes. Had the nails chemically killed so they didnt grow back, had it done the first time and didnt watch. Watched the second time and wished I hadn't!!

I ran over my hand when I was a lot younger, sitting down on a skateboard and not paying enough attention.

2 of my right fingers went under the wheels and the nails went black and eventually fell off.

The strange thing was I couldnt feel anything for a while in them, but could lift the nail up like a flap and see the new nail growing underneath it.
