They might be but they're stuffed to the rafters with carbs and are full of (natural) sugar which won't do a thing for weight loss. In fact you're more likely to put on weight than lose it unless you do a st-ton of exercise to compensate.

Joining late. Last year managed to pile on everything I lost previously. Back up to my heaviest 120.4kg. Aiming ultimately to get back to my glory days of 94kg from a couple of years back!

Given up the booze for a year. Rest is just east less, get back into training.

That may be true, but weight loss isn't the only thing to consider in terms of nutrition.

It's probably a lot healthier than a Mars bar though.

I eat a banana a day, I like them and as mentioned, probably better than a Mars.

Late to the party, but hopefully there is room for one more?

I'm 39, 5'10" and roughly 14st 8lbs (I'll double check later)

Every new year I tell myself I'll lose some weight before the summer and never do. Turning 40 in September has made me think more seriously of doing something about it now. As it will only get harder in the future.

So I'm aiming for a fighting weight of 11st 5lbs and getting back into some of my 34" waist jeans.

OK, I'm in - got to be with a username like mine! rofl

Couple of years ago found me at 18st 9lbs. Lost around 2½ Stone through Slimming World but since put a chunk back on. I'm back with SW, it works for me & I can get my head round it but at 51 and in prime heart attack territory, I'm aware I really need to lose a really big chunk!

I'd like to get down to around 88kg over the year (or less!). Currently started at 111.5kg on the 27th Dec and now at 110.6kg

At 76.5kg I'm in. After doing well through the first half of last year I've eaten really badly since July and especially over Christmas. No real target this time, just steady weight loss through sensible food eating and a reduction in junk.

I learnt quite a bit last time, have just got distracted recently, but thankfully have not got back to 17 stone plus, or the 18 st 2 peak I saw.

I found I could easily skip breakfast, as by the time I fancied something it was 10am, just hang on for lunch, there are different schools of thought on that, have to not over compensate with a massive lunch. Similarly, if starving before Dinner, dont snack, just perhaps have dinner a bit earlier.

Dont overshoot, I eat too quickly and wolf food down, I will keep going past what I need, have a break and see if you still want more.

Its not a sprint, it takes ages but it comes off if you are consistent and you dont have to be miserable, you cant still eat plenty and lose weight.

If you are peckish at night, go to bed, you dont necessarily wake up as hungry, or hungrier.

A cup a soup can stave off hunger for quite a while, well, not that long but long enough

You cant booze and loose weight, you can have the odd night but best just forget it for a bit as its full of calories and makes you eat crap as it makes you hungry and lose discipline.

Dark Chocolate, one square, after dinner is enough to turn off the craving for something sweet, its pretty good for you, tastes nice and you dont need much.

Eat veg freely, ok, not chips but stuff like Pepper, Brocolli, Onions etc, same with salad, be more sparing with fruit.

People go on about Diet Drinks being worse than full sugar, that wasnt my experience, a can of Diet Coke has zero calories and tastes nice, but go for water when you can.

Dont get disheartened, if you know you have been disciplined and no weight has come off, remember it isnt linear, and also remember you arent immune to the laws of physics/thermodynamics, work out your BMR/TDEE (google it) and then work out what you are eating, honestly and try to run a deficit whilst eating good stuff. Some days you will go up despite being good, like I said, dont get disheartened as weight loss is like one of those penny falls, nothing for ages and then it all crashes off in one go, sometimes, inexplicably, after a blowout ! you then drop four pounds overnight which is amazing, similarly when that happens, dont get cocky !

there is no quick fix but get the parameters right and stick to it, its easier than you imagine, its not about a herculean effort for two weeks eating 1000 cals a day and at the gym every day, it needs to be sustainable.

I find, once you get started and see some progress it becomes "A thing", and as you go on it gets better, it is precious and you try to nurture it, its the getting started that is the hard bit, takes me a week or so before I feel a difference and see the point.

Dont let anyone pressure you into boozing, stick to your guns, you can still enjoy yourself without having 8 pints.

Get some activity, a short walk can easily burn 100 extra calories, a small kitkat, doesnt sound much, but do it every day 100 cals less a day is half a stone over a year.

Then when you have done it, maintain it, this is where I went wrong.

One thing to watch for when using apps like myfitnesspal is that I used it to 'spend' whats left of my daily allowance of calories in minus calories out.

I used to log everything I ate, plus the gym routine and any walking the dog, but I used to ignore the walking round at the office as it wasnt much. I found that i would sit down at the end of the day, see that I had calories left to 'spend', and the chocolate bar would be calling....

I found that just using common sense, using myfitnesspal as a calories guide, and weighing myself once a week worked better, I managed to drop from 109kg to 105kg in 3 months using the app, but dropped from 105kg to 95kg in 3 months not using the app, part of that was building on previous gains, part of that was not eating my full daily allowance.

It did all fall apart though as I stopped the gym after hurting my back and piled it all back on.

This weekend was a bad one, im planning on having a healthy week so will have a weigh in on Saturday.

On the breakfast thing, a couple of ideas that stuck with me a few years back when I went from 88kg down to 70kg - within reason, eat what you like for breakfast. Although quite impractical now with a young family - I found the breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince, dine like a pauper worked really well for weight-loss and satisfaction. Daytime hunger is the enemy and downfall of many.

Second, although it's antisocial, having breakfast at the right time is key for me. I prefer to mix up my porridge at home then eat it at work at around 9.30. I'm not hungry until then as I'll have a coffee when my kiddo eats his cereal, but it sustains me better through to lunch.

I've not seen it mentioned yet (except in the post above! D'oh! Horses for courses though and the eating up to your allowance is real, but I was OK about it), but MFP, or MyFitnessPal (or similar) is excellent for accountability. Putting everything you eat into a daily diary is eye opening, borderline frightening if you're a sugar addict like me. My most successful weight loss periods are while I track my food. My gains are when I stop, thinking (wrongly) I can eat sensibly and manage my weight. I can't, so I set myself an "alarm weight". I'm going to lower the alarm weight after this go-around.

Finally, and this is more contentious, but I'm trying to keep exercise and weight-loss a separate thing. Yes, calories in vs calories out is simple maths, but move more, eat less is a gross over-simplification. How you move and what you eat are far more impactful. This time I shall not be using exercise to "buy" extra calories, but instead making the calories I do eat go further, by making them the best quality I can. I'm not advocating a sedentary lifestyle, but I do think each individual needs to think about themselves and what area or areas need work to trigger wight loss sustainably.

I say all this of course, but I'm still here. Must take my own advice...

In reply to what Smitters wrote, I think MFP and the other apps are good, but used as a guide of calories in and out, but as someone further up wrote, everyone is different, and the apps seem to just be a balancing act. Muscle is heavier that fat, and until someone can develop an app that tracks weight, muscle size, muscle density, fat density and everything else, then its only of limited use.

Im looking at loosing weight, but my main focus is the gut, the aim is losing fat, in the process I will add muscle, but the gut is 44 inches, as long as this is reducing then i will know im on the right track.

I'd like to have a 30-32" (real) waist again.
I lost most of my flab over the last year or two, down from 90-odd kgs to my current 77 kgs.
Still have a bit of a belly though - (real) waist at bellybutton measured 94cm (37") 31 December. I wear 32" waist trousers/jeans down from 36" at my biggest, but that hardly counts. hehe

I kicked things off NYD starting at 89kg and now I'm now down to 86.5kg.

I'm eating sensibly, i.e. avoiding a tube of Pringles a day whilst my tea's cooking, no alcohol and 5 hours of moderate exercise.

Only 24lbs to go.

If you can, make sure your scales are on a solud surface. Soft surfaces can distort your weight reading.
