What Are Your Gym/Fitness/Routine Moans?

Half an hour after a workout is about right. Also there's no such thing as 'noob gains'. There is greater neural adaptation in a beginner weight trainer but any muscle hypertrophy only occurs for the same reason as a seasoned weightlifter - plenty of rest and exercise that challenges the muscle.
With absolutely no evidence whatsoever I'd have to disagree. A complete beginner (with the right diet and exercises) is surely going to experience quicker results than a seasoned gym-goer for 2 reasons;
1. any long-time gym-goer will be familiar with plateaus. To get over them, you shock the body by changing your routine in some way. So surely to somebody with no routine at all, ANY exercising is going to see results quicker than a pro after all, a beginner is experiencing the ultimate plateau, no?
2. Being a complete noob means the muscles have MUCH further to go before they hit their metaphorical peak. You can't deny that the longer you go to the gym, the slower the gains appear, the weight increases on the bar become harder and harder to get. So if you go back to the other end i.e. "the start", then surely that's when gains & weight improvements are at the quickest?
You're right that they happen for the same reasons, noob or pro, but I don't think "noob gains" are a figment of someone's imagination.
Let's not do the 'no evidence' thing. Just go and look it up from somewhere credible.

As I said, I agree they occur for the same reasons, but they're more noticeable in a beginner for the reasons I stated. Or is that not what you mean?

I always took the phrase "noob gains" to mean gains occurring at a rate that simply is not possible the further you go in your "gym career".
That's what the broscience would have people believe but it's complete nonsense. Beginners don't grow any faster than anyone else. If they're adequately rested and have a good trainer they may develop surprisingly quickly to the eyes of one who doesn't really pay much attention to them, but their physiology is the same as everyone else, obviously. Just because a bunch of tired and jaded gym monkeys noticed some beginners packed on muscle quickly and they thought "What? Must be something going on - I don't put on muscle that quickly!" and the answer is you would if you rested properly, didn't overtrain and got your act together. All factors that won't impede a beginner's progress.Centurion07 said:

See above comment. Also, what about plateaus? To get over them you have to shock the muscles in some way, surely the ultimate shock is to go from nothing to something?
Like I said, I have no evidence whatsoever so am quite happy to be proved wrong.

You are comparing a steroid user to a beginner. I'm not sure you realise how much muscle is required to add 2" to the chest. It's years in either case.
Oh I do, I'm merely making the point that Arnie had nowhere much to go; he was as big as he could get so for him to add 2" would be more difficult than for a beginner, hence the "noob gains" thing. Two extremes obviously but it demonstrates part of my argument.Centurion07 said:

Years? for a beginner? depends on the genetics of the individual but I know a few people who put on that kind of muscle in about 2-3 months. Some kids grow like weeds - their bodies are just waiting for some physical stimulus and good nutrition.

Right I'll start.
If you have finished using the machine...... GET OFF OF IT!!!!
I know it sounds silly but when I go to the gym I have a set routine and usually a set amount of time to do it in, so it pisses me right off when someone decides to have a nice rest, perhaps send a text or watch whatever sport or music video is on the TVs.
I understand that once we have finished our shoulder press's or leg extentions standing straight up could cause us to faint but do you really need to sit there on the only machine of its type in the gym for 5 minutes? I could ask you politely if you've finished but I'm a bit of a miserable sod and I really don't like talking to strangers unless I really have to so can you learn some basic manners and consider that maybe, just maybe, someone else may like to use that machine too.
Anyway rant over, I have many other gripes that are gym related but I'll refrain from boring you with tham for now. Thank you and goodnight

I think all gym kit should have james bond style ejector seats, not enough activity the then twunt gets catapulted.
My actual big gripe is Jan - mid feb when the gym is packed full of new years resolutionists who do the above but more so

Yup. I do find that ridiculous. afew days back I saw 3 girls enter the gym, all went onto rowing machines for barely 5minutes, then went onto the treadmills for 5minutes then left. Probably only went so that they could make an instagram photo and hashtag the hell out of the picture.I think all gym kit should have james bond style ejector seats, not enough activity the then twunt gets catapulted.

It's pre-wedding women for me right now - there's two on my fb feed and it's all "why aren't I losing weight, I only have half a bottle of wine and a 12" pizza a night, with a couple packets of Quavers (those are low-cal after all hehe) for afters" complete with sweaty pics of them in their gym gear (not attractive).
These are the type of women who couldn't spell gym until the wedding bells started ringing, and are now experts cos they bought matching NikeFit leggings and crop top.

Thankfully I don't go near cardio stuff or machines. I think all gym kit should have james bond style ejector seats, not enough activity the then twunt gets catapulted.

As long as the power rack is free or there's some dumbbells free I'm good!
Few days ago I saw some young lads (easily under 20) doing squats on the power rack. Terrible form. Ontop of that I saw them walking forwards out of the rack in order to squat and walking backwards towards the rack in order to drop the bar into the rack. (I always thought it was better to do it the other way round no?)
One of them would spot the other by standing on one side of the bar and holding the end. Maybe it's just me but isn't that abit useless? It was only 2 of them.

Got a new one: some nugget at my gym thinks that the entire changing room wants to listen to his stty offensive rap music whilst changing. Finishes his workout, comes into the changing room, unplugs his earphones from his phone & leaves it blaring out whilst he gets changed to go to the shower. .
