I did my first race yesterday :-)

Was a bit nervous about doing it since ive not done anything like that for probably 20 + years. Turned up to find about 250 runners. Im thinking to myself i will be happy if i dont come last.

My mate won the race and the other came 3rd.

Im well happy with my performance. Finished in the top 30 with a time of 24.55 which is way way way faster than i ever thought id do. I would of been happy with under 30min. My mates were shocked that id finnished so well.

TBH i dont think the course was quite 5k if i ran it that fast but hey ho. Might even try and do a bit of training for a 10k now.

How old are you if you don't mind me asking? You said 20+ years without training but in that pic you look really young (although maybe its down to the poor picture quality).

Anyway well done!

Right now my plan is to keep up the daily swim, or at least some form of cardio daily to shift the initial weight, I'm swimming 30 minutes every morning, and looking to do at least 3 evening classes a week. If I can't find somewhere to train I'll probably just take a bag to a quiet corner of the gym and spar with it for 45 minutes or so.

I'm open to advice, I'm fat, out of shape, and it's been at least 10 years since I saw the inside of a gym (not counting ones I've seen on TV), so hook me up.
Others will be along shortly to advise on exercise I'm sure, but I'll start off with my tired old mantra of losing fat is done in the kitchen. Eat less rubbish - it's way easier to not eat calories than to consume them then have to burn them off again. wink

Name: Sushi

Height: 1.8m
Weight: 125kg
Body Fat: Yes

Goal: To lose 25 kilogrammes, I've started swimming daily and eating sensibly. I'll also be starting up some form of martial art again (previously 6 years wing chun)

main reasons for wanting to get fit are: I've really let myself go over the past 10 years, I used to be very active playing rugby and doing wing chun, but a ruptured disc after a collapsed scrum put paid to that and I've never really recovered mentally. I have twin boys, turning 2 in May and I'd like to be able to keep up with them, I also think I need to set them a good example as I can't let them get like my lardy ass has.

Right now my plan is to keep up the daily swim, or at least some form of cardio daily to shift the initial weight, I'm swimming 30 minutes every morning, and looking to do at least 3 evening classes a week. If I was giving advice it would be to start slowly and build up. After not training for such a long time your body needs sometime to re-adjust to training.

And then when you're ready (ideally day 1!) start to get your diet sorted out. I'd hazard a guess you are massively over-eating or eating rubbish (and maybe drinking?) to get to 125kg.

Diet is really the key to the end result, its simply not possible for most of us to get even a half decent body without a good diet.

To start with get rid of sugars, heavily processed foods, fast foods and drink, then after a month or two review where you are and modify accordingly. My preference is very well known on here which is a low carb diet (high protein/low-medium carbs and mid/high fats).

I can tell you how to literally lost a massive amount of weight in an incredibly short time (see my old threads) but the problem with this approach for most is it results in massive burn out after a few weeks unless you are ultra-committed to the life style change because its not always pleasant!

Oi I'm nearly your age! smile

Lord Grover I'm sure wont mind me saying is close to 50 and in great shape. Lots of 50's guys in my gym with superb bodies and actually I guy I often train with who is 61 and can outlift me on most lifts.

I don't run too much as I struggle with shin problems and problems with my ankle. I do go for gentle 45 min runs along the beach often but I'm careful. I had the choice to have an operation on my legs but choose not too since I can control it.

I see quite a few older fellas on mountain bikes to jumping off stuff i would bottle out of booooooooooo

Can you point me in the right direction for this? Quite interested in meals/macros/calories/activity if such a thing exists.

I could provide a far better plan today than I did back then but it did work very well. I've learn't so much since I started all of this and now can adjust my body at will.

Just bought some dumbbells and that marks the completion of my home gym (Until I need more weight). I won't bother adding it all up as I'm quite sure it's over £550 at this point. wobble

Olympic stuff is so expensive.

Standard oly dumbbells and because:

1) I want to check my body for imbalances.

2) Eventually I'll need them for the more advanced bodybuilding routines.

It's not too bad, as it doesn't depreciate too much, especially the bar and weights smile

I used to train in my friend's garage, until I bought all the stuff from him recently. I had been using it exclusively since October as well.

For £350 I got:

Olympic bar, dumbells and 142.5kg of plates
Adjustable bench
Squat stands
Hi/Lo pulley machine
E-Z Curl barbell
Gymnastic rings
Wall mountable pull-up bar
Push-up bars, straps, mirrors, collars etc

He paid nearly £800 for it all biggrin
