Ask for a full end to end endoscopy / colonoscopy and don't be fobbed off.

Also investigate the private cost.

My mum went to NHS and they just referred her to the exact same private clinic that I used under my private medical policy. We were both given clean bill of health and oddly a lot of symptoms go when you hear that!

The stomach is a funny thing and studies have shown that it can act like a second brain in that it can react faster than the brain and nervous system.

Have you tried yoga?

might sound silly but some stretching exercise might help you, that or some colonic irrigation.
Yeah, sort of. I’ve done it before as part of a warm up/cool down for a bigger workout. Not for a while though but I’ll try anything.

I need to have another conversation with the doctor. Private isn’t an option, I’ve looked before and even the basic tests are way out of my price range.

I’ve repeatedly been told it’s nothing major and it’s ‘just’ IBS but literally everything I’ve read suggests there’s a trigger food, and I don’t have one. I just feel like crap all the time.

Op, try going plant-based for a couple of weeks. Give your intestines a rest. Loads of good healthy plant-based (vegan) recipes available online. And the myth that eating more veggies makes more wind isn’t true.
I’m not far off that already, so that wouldn’t be too big a step.
Hi OP, I know this post is over a year old, but was wondering if you're still eating meat and fish?

I spent years feeling similar to you, then around the end of last year I though I'd try dropping meat and fish entirely, as it occurred to me that hygiene standards in meat production, particularly chicken, are not exactly what I'd like them to be. A really sobering story about this in a Farming magazine was the prompt to this thinking. It gave me this notion that maybe I was ingesting bacteria which didn't suit my own gut bacteria.

Completely unscientific and loopy conspiracist sounding, I know. But it seems to have worked. It took a while but during this year I've noticed much greater digestive comfort, and much less wind, and much more regular and properly textured movements, for want of a better phrase. I don't think I'll ever eat meat again. Whether it was some kind of intolerance or something to do with bacteria, I don't know, and I'll never have any way of knowing. But I feel loads better, so I'll stick with it.

Thanks for the reply. My answer would be yes and no. I don’t eat a lot of meat or fish, I’ll have a vegetable curry over a meat one, for example (although recently I’ve been avoiding anything spicy so that’s a bad example.)

I don’t really eat fish at all other than tinned tuna occasionally, sometimes I’ll have some meat from the deli counter in a sandwich or a with some salad and potatoes.

But… it’s not something I actively avoid. I’m really not against a totally meat free diet, I just haven’t tried it properly yet.

It’s a good shout though. It could be something that ‘simple’.

I’m considering the option that it’s a consequence of sitting at a desk, which obviously isn’t a simple fix.
Get a stand up one.
It is extremely unlikely that my employer would allow me to do that.
I did that for a while, I just put my computer screen and keyboard up on boxes so I could reach them "normally" whilst standing. It attracted a lot of unwanted attention, but they couldn't stop me.

Hi Rob,

I have posted on this thread previously.

These may help with the symptoms
They really help when I get bloating/trapped wind
Simethicone is the active ingredient

https://www.boots.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Pr...

I do not get my symptoms very often now. Suspect some is food related but have never been able to identify what.
Not as stressed and more active. Not loads activity wise but try to move around quite frequently and 20-30 min brisk walks 2-3 lunchtimes a week.
Are you managing to move a bit more?

Ref the suggested colonic irrigation in this thread. Don't think that is recommended if you have gastric problems.

Haven’t drank for 4 years so it’s definitely not that.

Yeah I’ve tried Deflatine but it doesn’t work, same with peppermint tea, peppermint oil capsules, drinking sparkling water to give it a jump start, it all doesn’t work.

Rob I'm honestly not following when you say the cost is out of your league, it would appear to be in the £2 - 3,000 range.

You've been in pain for two years now, I would be borrowing, doing extra hours, selling on vinted, downgrading car, cancelling holidays, shopping at LIDL etc. to get this test done.

My conclusion from my own anecdotal experience is that it was mass-produced chicken doing it to me. I ate that pretty much 4-5 times a week as my missus insists on it being in almost every meal. But since I've dropped it (and all the other processed meats I'd eat like ham and salami) I've been far, far better - pretty much cured. I still eat cheese and eggs in reasonable amounts, so it wasn't dairy in my case, which is a very popular thing to blame.

I’ll have a look again. When I looked for something as simple as a blood test last time it was £200+ which I just don’t have. £2-3000 is so far out of my budget it might as well be £2-3m

I already live very frugally, lights off in the evening, never go out for food or order takeaways, wear the same 5 black T-shirts on rotation etc. I’m not well off, but I will explore the options because I can’t keep on keeping on.

I still think a private Nutritionist wouldn't cost a great deal, would be much quicker than dealing with GP and NHS and (if my experience is anything to go by) could help enormously.

Still ongoing. Should have had a call from the doctor last week, but as always I’ve been let down again.

The phone rang once and then cut off. I called their office immediately and repeatedly (20 times total) but couldn’t get through.

Called the next morning to be told they’re looking into it and I’ll get a rescheduled call at some point. Bearing in mind this one was 6 months after the last, I’m not expecting a swift turnaround.

Not read all the pages but.. perhaps you could make an A&E visit? Maybe you've noticed signs of blood etc? That may warrant a diagnostic test in quick order.

It’s not in my nature to go to A&E unless it’s a genuine emergency.

That’s part of the problem. It’s not urgent enough for that but waiting months to get no help at all is too long. I need the middle ground.
