I was reading this a couple of days ago and was thinking how lucky I was to not have any close family affected by cancer until last night I got a call from my Mum saying she had breast cancer.

She seems positive and is going in for an Opp next week to have it removed so fingers crossed everything will be ok.

So I just wanted to say... f*CK YOU CANCER!

Funny old one cancer. Pretty much everyone is affected by it and they will continue to be for however long homosapiens roam the land.

They used to say that about polio, and a load of diseases that are now a thing of the past. No reason to think we won't defeat cancer eventually.

I'm 6 years clear now. Melanoma, Breslin level 4 (medium to bad). Never think about it much but first 2 years was hell. Used to worry daily because I have a young family.

Things you don't expect happen afterwards, can't get life insurance for natural death, had a job offer retracted after medical etc etc...

All good now and life goes on merrily...

My Mum was diagnosed a few weeks ago. Cancer of the esophagus. In the week that followed, she had to have a PET scan, laproscopy and MRI. The surgeon advises that it is a serious operation to remove it but it can be done. However, I just learnt that there is something on her lung, they don't know what it is and it needs a biopsy. My wife and I are expecting our first in a few weeks time. My emotions are entirely conflicted. God knows what my poor Mum is going through, and also my Dad.

I have lost my Nan and my Uncle to cancer. I go from fear, to hope, to blind fury all in the space of a few minutes. I agree with the sentiments of the original post.

My thoughts are with anybody going through this, or who have had their lives turned upside down.

All you feel is very normal. Head and neck cancers present their own set of rather specialist challenges and patient issues. I strongly suggest that either you or your family read more about it and the scope of the treatment plans available. Macmillan.co.uk - go read and join and read the specialist head/neck sections.

The more knowledge you have, the more you understand, the more you will be able to manage your emotions and the whole 'i'm st scared of the unknown' process. WRT a head and neck cancer... i've stood in your place and really, the sooner you understand, the sooner you will be able to support your mum and dad. Do this soon. Please.

Thanks all for the kind words, this is very helpful.

I've done as much factual reading on this as possible, and yes it helps to be as well informed as you can be. My Dad on the other hand doesn't like to know...he finds it too scary. It must be so hard for him. They are just coming up to retirement and now this.

I don't want to turn this thread specifically to my situation, maybe I'll start one to see if others have any experiences about this specific cancer, or maybe go to the Cancer research forum.
