5km in 17 mins is a very fast time, so unless you're an extremely fit footballer I'd say you don't have a chance. I'd even go so far as to say if you can do 5km in 17 minutes with no running training, then you should quit football and try and make a career in running.
This.My local Parkrun's course record is 14.5 minutes and the guy that consistently comes first at the moment is clocking in at 16 minutes or so and looks like st at the end of it.
Fair play if you can hit 17 minutes without focused 5k training but consider anything between 20 and 25 good going for an untrained 5k runner.
I ran exactly 5.04km (according to the iphone app) last night, it took me 27 minutes and I was fooked. That said, I haven't been out running since May!...
To do under 20 minutes is some extreme pace. My run included a lot of varied landscape and even several sets of steps (yes, Eye of the Tiger was going thru my head at the time...)
If it were on a treadmill that's a completely different environment and far, far easier.

I'm 35 and have knee problems (2 acl replacements in the last 2 years) a spur on one foot and ligament damage on the other. I've never really run before May this year.
I just hit 30mins pretty much dead, but on the run stage of a sprint triathlon. I'm hoping to improve on that, but I'm really not sure by how much!
I'm not unfit, and find its my joints holding me back (feeling very unstable) rather than my cardio fitness. Very frustraiting!

Your joints are still unstable? I had my ACL done in may and feels great, just the confidence in it that is lacking but thats a mental thing. I just hit 30mins pretty much dead, but on the run stage of a sprint triathlon. I'm hoping to improve on that, but I'm really not sure by how much!

I've got the excuses ready if I post a naff time. Knackered from football on saturday and running in pumps
Might have a dummy run at it tonight after training
you better be truthfull! Might have a dummy run at it tonight after training
im still confident about my over 25 mins as your running in pumps which is going to hurt!
Boothy – you seem to be a nice chap.
Can I give you some friendly advice.
If you try to run it tonight, run 1k as a warm up – i.e. a nice slow pace.
Then run 5 k, aim to complete it in 25 minutes, IE at 12km/h. Don’t try to go quicker. You can’t really affect your training for Sunday at this stage, but you could really blow your chances.
See how you feel at the end of the 25 minute 5k. and then run another 1 k as a cool down, again at a slow pace.
Opta stats show that even aggressive midfielders rarely run more than 8k in professional games over 90 minutes. So 7k in around 40 minutes might well be harder than you think.
If you can run on grass….
We want a link posted to the race results, please !
