Complete pussy here when it comes to the dentist. I’ve had a broken back tooth for 15 years after the dentist I used back then used several numbing injections without them working, spraying blood from my mouth over his jacket and ungloved hands before joking that what I was paying was going towards his M3 service.

Went 14 years without a visit after that. Needed several fillings which I had done without the injections but also required a root canal and a crown doing.

For that work the dentist used a pre injection gel that numbed the area before he used the needle. It went great, did not feel a thing from start to finish and that relaxed me a lot.

If you don’t use it already ask the dentist for the gel before injection.

I go every 12mths, or however often I'm summoned.

It helps that the first dentist I had (for 25yrs) was exceptionally good.

Those since have been st - its not exactly a profession known for kind service.

I am beyond Phobic as far as Dentistry goes. Eevn talking about it makes my stomach waver.

I have 3 broken teeth that required work and I just couldnt face the thought, much less the actual work.

If I had the cahnce, I would apy to have a general and have all my teeth fully sorted as Im that phobic about the whole deal.

Not a fan of dentists myself however I go every 9 months for my routine check up.

I don't mind the injections, the problem is they don't work on me. Several occasions I've had 5 injections and they've no effect. So I am filled with dread whenever dentist says I need to have something done. This hasn't always been the case though as I have been numbed before (by the same dentist) but something strange has happened, as my dentist put it. I thought it may have been technique of my dentist but it's happened with 2 of their other dentists too. I've had similar experiences to some of you where you've left your fingernails buried in the arms of the chair.

The whole practice are baffled and now I'm waiting for a referral to a specialist research hospital.

Anyone had an IV sedation? That's currently what I'm looking at if I need even a basic filling now. Anyone else seemingly immune to the anesthetic?

Yes - massive girl when it comes to dentists. In fact I haven't even read any of the previous posts just in case there's a horror story in there.

My dentist put me out - for all work. But very sadly he died 2 years ago.... so I am wobbly about the next time I need work and not being able to find someone who can do this.

IV sedation is the only way to go for me. :0)

I'm terrified of doctors but actually don't mind the dentist and actually have a good laugh with mine. Nothing better than a tooth getting pulled after toothache but even stuff like root canal, new tooth is not as bad as you make it out in your head.

Its a few minutes and possibly a little prick in your mouth

When a consultant tells you ,”you did well to come in when you did” .....”people die from that”alters you perception of dentists

Me too. I don't know why I even clicked on this topic (probably having imbibed three bottles of IPA helped). My wife gave up trying to talk me round years ago; I would point-blank refuse to discuss it.

Last bit eekhehe

I don't quite understand the dentist fear, but then again, sadly, I'm much more of a regular than I'd like to be.
As for root canals, a PITA prior to getting to my dentist, especially at 30,000 ft + with no painkillers (for one of them) but the actual process wasn't anything remotely close to - had far more irritation from fillings.

More upset by failings & cost than any notion of pain or anything around the visit. A few things never hurt anybody smile, so a bit like big, ugly, burly blokes being scared of spiders.

However, not overly fond of hospitals. Maybe it has something to do with infrequency of visits?

Reading through the posts I'm amazed at the amount of people confessing to have pain and broken teeth.living with it for the sake of an imagined fear which never goes away, only gets worse.
I'm of the age who can remember the old style dentists,Large belt driven, foot operated drills that viberated in your mouth, akin to a road menders.Large injections, same size as given to horses.Extractions were under gas anasthetic with a rubber bung in your mouth and a rubber mask over your face.A doctor had to be present.
Todays dentistry, whilst not totally painless is a far cry from that.
I visit the dentist every six months and on my last visit he advised that a back tooth was badly cracked and would not last.Sure enough two months later it broke and fell out, trip to dentist for extraction.
I was sat in the chair at 3 pm,by 3.15 the tooth was out and I was paying the bill, much more painful!
Find yourself a good dentist, have regular check ups so they know your teeth, and keep on top of it.
If any one in the North East wants a good dentist contact Mark,Onward House Dental,Hurworth near Darlington, phone 01325 721999.He is a classic car nut and spends most of the consultation talking cars so you don't notice what he's doing.
He looks after all my family's teeth including four year old grandson.
No he hasn't paid me.

Pure terror and dental phobic.....

Ive lost an eye tooth, the second one round from that and two molars, as I would rather endure the pain of toothache than visit the dentist.

Just talking about dentisrty sets my stomach and nerves wobbling. Actually being in the seat with rubber gloves in my mouth makes heave....

....And thats before i have to pay a bill big enough to finance a Caterham......

I don't mind the dentist, the drilling and smells don't bother me but that sodding needle makes me want to pass out or be sick.

How can something that takes literally 3 seconds illicit such a response?

Injections arent my issue, its the smell, the noise, the cost, the rubber gloves in your mouth....
