i'd say over 60% have mental health issues. Although we only tend to see older addicts, as younger ones can not hack the discipline of making a drug agency and doctors apointment once a week as well as daily pickups.
I'd defy anyone to identfy 50% of addicts at my surgery, yes some are lowlife. but others are believe it or not genuinely nice people. Once motivated and having a direction they can get their life back ontrack and detox completely and sucessfully.
just my 2p
I can work out why people need an escape if they can't see any other way out. As I said, I come from that background. I made the decision not to go down the path that most of my year at school went down, but a lot of them had no other option open to them to their minds. It's just sad.

Ciggies are a much harder drug to give up.
do you speak from personal experience?Heroin is a a tough initial detox followed by a long period of mental anguish that is much more likely to lead to relapse than the physical pain (although the pain can do it too!) Methadone is another problem as the detoxification period is longer but addicts usually say that the mental anguish is slightly less intense so; heroin is short but sharp, methadone is less intense but l-o-n-g. However methadone substitute treatment cannot be underestimated as a successful treatment method. Many addicts who have been hardcore criminals for years have gone on to be productive members of society via methadone treatment.(Methadone treatment in this country is only just catching up with, for example the States where it has a much higher success rate.)
Saying all junkies should die is ridiculous, whoever that was. Wait til one of your family is afflicted, as they surely will be eventually. Addiction affects us all in some way eventually mate, be it booze, fags, drugs or food.
