Lack of sleep when you are young is just training for when you have kids and they get you up every 2 hours.

7-8 most nights, then normally a good 1-2 hour afternoon nap most days as well!

I can go a day after getting say 4-5 hours sleep and be ok as long as I sleep 8 the next night. I like to get at least 7 hours but that is with waking up due to dogs barking/cats pawing at me etc...

6-7 hours generally, have been known to get as little as three (If I sleep), most I can manage is 8-9 hours, after that I can't physically stay in bed...

Having had sleep problems for most of my life, although I rarely feel tired, I watched this with a lot of interest. I was soon bored as I found that the majority of what they said related to common sense... no stimulants within 4 hours of bed, routine etc etc.

Fact of the matter is some people just need less sleep. My main issue is my lack of sleep pisses off every girlfriend I have!!!

I was wondering if there was a magic cure biggrin obviously not!!

Do some work during the day?

smash her back doors in, then listen to her after-sex pillow talk, that will send you to sleep....

I think there is a difference between people who genuinely don't need much sleep, and people who have judt got used to not sleeping much. I have a friend who existed for about 10 years on 4-5 hours sleep a night, and she thought at the time she was fine and just didn't need. Turns out once she made a fairly drastic lifestyle change (from working 60+ hours a week whilst being a parent to two boys to doing a 40 hour week and the boys have grown up) she slept about 10 hours a night, more at weekends, for a few months but has now 'settled' into getting about 7-8 and she feels so much better for it. She describes it as not knowing how tired she was until she stopped, which makes sense to me.

Of course this is just my opinion/experience

There was a bit on the program about insomnia and how you need to get yourself into a regular pattern. They done a test on Dominic Diamond where he was only allowed into his bedroom between the hours of 2am and 8am, so the idea is that you go in only to sleep, but you have to get up at 8 no matter what. Eventually your brain gets used to associating that room only with sleep. After 4 weeks of this he claims he was feeling a lot better and regularly getting 4-6 hours sleep. In the past he reckoned he'd been as long as 72 hours without sleep so he was struggling.

Me personally, i get around 6-8 most nights, and try get around 10/11 on a Saturday night/Sunday morning wink

I function better with around 8-10 hours but my girlfriend can cope quite well with only 6 hours sleep. Its all down to the individual.
have you ever tried forcing yourself to only have 6 hours a night for a while?
i used to be like you until i started doing 12 hour shifts at work. get back at 7, tea at 8 then watch some TV. before i knew it it was midnight and i had to be up in 5 hours! first few times i did this it was horrible but my body got used to it and now im fine with only 5-6 hours

Currently working 4 on 4 off with 12 hour shifts.

If i'm at work I can just about get by on 6.5 / 7 hours, 8 would be perfect but working 7 -7 doesn't give me enough time to get this.

When I'm off shift I usually get about 9 hours which seems to be enough to be fine.

I have a friend who gets probabaly 4 or 5 at the max every night. I have no idea how she does it.

I usualyl go to bed at 11.00pm most nights, baby wakes up at pretty much 0700 on the dot. So I fit in the 8hrs sleep category.

Saying that, I do start waking up from 5.00am onwards when thoughts of work start disturbing my dreams...

An interesting experiment was carried out a few years ago in which a bunch of bods were put into a house that was normal apart from a complete absence of windows or clocks, so they had no idea what time it was. They were told to live normally, and go to bed whenever they felt it was the right time. After a couple of weeks they settled into a pattern of 8 hours awake, 8 asleep, 8 awake and so on. In other words, left to its own devices, the human body will naturally create a 16-hour 'day' – as opposed to the 24-hour one we appear to have foisted onto ourselves purely on the basis of the Earth's axis-rotation speed.

What on earth would you do? Presumably no access to computers or any other form of media, since pretty much anything will give you a time. No wonder they'd get bored and sleep if they had to stay indoors all day with nothing to do.

They didn't have nothing to do, their living conditions were as near to normal as they could be made (without clocks and windows).

I average about 8 hours - though most times it's interrupted sleep.

I was channel hopping earlier and landed on a programme about sleep where they said that the healthy amount of sleep an adult should get is 8 hours. Does anybody on here sleep for 8 hours a night? I usually manage 4 on a weekday and a maximum of 6 on the weekend - is that abnormal, and am I causing myself harm?
You posted this at half past midnight.

Go to bed at a reasonable time, and you'll get more than 4 hours sleep, you muppet.
I was working nights, doing a bit of PH surfing while waiting for the rest of my team to turn up biglaugh

I have been told reliably by my doctor that sleeping a mimimum of 4 hours is perfectly acceptable as long as the person feels refreshed form their sleep.
