I usually* abstain Monday to Thursday.

I tend to drink Friday, Saturday and a little on Sunday evening. I usually drink 3-4 pints of beer and a 1-1.5 bottles of red.

So, more than some people and less than others.

What always worries me is if I do drink a little too much one evening, when am I safe to drive the next morning?

I've started using an app on my phone to record my alcohol intake again just to make sure it isn't going up.

If anyone else is interested the Alcodroid app is worth a look. It does also give weekly and monthly stats which are interesting (ish) and a very basic forecast of when the alcohol will be out of your system.

  • - I've had a glass of wine tonight. Oops.

Reduced consumption for me today with only 2 bottles of beer and 2 glasses of wine. Managed to hold off on a g&t so that was good. I live in Spain, so not far off the 35 units a week at today's rate. I like the way Finland tops the chart with 36 units!

Is there any evidence for that?

50ml of spirits at 40% is the same amount of alcohol as 500ml of beer/cider (what ever) at 4%.
Loads more water in the beer though, to wash it through your system, I’d imagine, rehydrate etc.

Day 4 ticked off.

Oddly just had filtered water all day today nothing else.
Good to know no waking up feeling “beer tired” tomorrow am.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I'm guessing compared to most I will be pretty shocking.

Me and OH both enjoy it a bit too much which doesn't help.

We always intend to have a few days off a week through the week but it doesn't always happen.

Generally, then, Monday - Thursday, if I don't drink, I'll have at least a bottle of wine a night, sometimes nearly 2.

If I'm out on a Friday, its often about 6 or 7 pints, a couple of shots, then some wine when home.

Saturday and Sunday a few ciders and lagers and couple of bottles of wine. Maybe a few shots.

FAR too much in all honesty. But even if I could consistently have at least a couple of days off every week I feel it would work wonders.

Lets not mention the weed habit...

Why do I do it? I grew up around it all. Most friends I have or have had have been pissheads and stoners, and even my parents are pissheads. Though they are both in surprisingly good health for their mid 60s age.

One thing I rarely do now though is get genuinely smashed. Don't really care for doing that much now (did that far too much in my 20s).

Please don't judge me!

Absolutely. Maybe this thread might be a wake up call to just one individual or maybe more. The posts by some who have been down the rabbit hole and come out the other side is eye opening and apppreciated - the no bull st how it was and how easy things changed.

I’d like to think I’m miles and miles away from the rabbit hole yet somethings I’ve read and some things I’ve realised about my own behaviour indicate I’m prebably far closer than I had imagined. Which is concerning.

If you're consuming that much on a daily basis, I'm not surprised you rarely get genuinely smashed any more. I'd imagine you must've built up such a tolerance to alcohol by now that getting genuinely smashed would actually be a really significant logistical challenge!

No judgement here, what worries me is that I don't see that amount as really too shocking. I think I posted earlier that on my weeks off I drink far too much... across the week it would exceed what you've put up. Though would tend to be spread through the day, so could be a couple of pints or bottle of wine at lunch, maybe a 1 1/2 bottles in the evening. Repeat at least every other day & off days being a bottle in the evening. I get into bad habits of being restrained when at work but unrestrained when not.

The people that drink a lot i guess don't drive the next day. I mean for example 2 bottles of wine would take 21 hours to process out the system from start.

We're not in to making judgements on this thread [......well done, guys]. I guess we all know only too well how easy it is to get into a lifestyle that treats alcohol as part of a routine day/week, but it takes a man to come on here and talk about it, warts and all.
I know quite a few heavy drinkers who, most probably, got into it because their parents were also heavy drinkers - after all, kids will usually take a lead from those closest to them. Of course, much the same happens in their teens/twenties when they spend most of their time socially, with good mates. I guess there's a certain level of peer pressure in such situations and guys will want to feel part of the gang rather than be an outcast.
I doubt that we on this thread will have any easy answers that 'experts' haven't said before but that isn't the point, it's just an issue for discussion. We will achieve quite a bit if just a few people take the time to seriously consider how much alcohol they consume, whether they [honestly] want to cut down - or whether they feel it's acceptable to just continue as they are.

That depends on a lot of factors (age, gender, weight, experience etc) and just because the alcohol isn't fully metabolised doesn't mean that the drinker will be over the DD limit at any particular time the next day.

Remember too that the body begins metabolising the wine fairly quickly after the first mouthful. By the time the last mouthful is consumed the body has already been metabolising alcohol for (probably) several hours.

it's probably best not to focus on that, lest we get all judgmental.

This thread has already acted as a catalyst for me. I consider myself a moderate drinker, yet since this thread started i have packed in all my 'just because' drinking on an evening. i didn't need it and i was just pouring myself drinks out of habit on an evening. this simple act was putting me over double the recommended dosage, so i've stopped it.

if it can make people just stop and consider their position instead of rolling along with the status quo, then that has to be a good thing...

There will always be temptations !!

I guess it's the long term lifestyle that matters.

Thanks guys, refreshing not to be lectured about it. I know its a problem and I continously strive to try and drink less. I'll never give up with that, but I also understand that I will have bad weeks as well as good. As for the driving question, I'm pleased to say I don't. I walk to work and back every day (it's under 2 miles).

No judgement here.

Weed and alcohol had a big connection for me too. In fact the weed habit came first, but soon turned into weed + alcohol most days. Started very young and was a 'wake and bake' sort of guy from 15 to about 23. Not my most productive years it has to said.

I don't smoke anymore. I moved away from my home town which was the driving force in stopping. But the alcohol still continues, more socially acceptable and all that, although I don't drink everyday.

I have nothing against weed though and believe it's just a matter of time before it's legal. A lot of parts of the world are waking up to this now. Who would have thought USA would legalize it!

Recently spent some time on the west coast - Washington, Oregon, California. They've really taken to it! Shops everywhere, billboards etc.

If I could replace my beers with a joint or two it would probably be better for the waistline!! (Although maybe not the lungs...)

I’d say the aim should be to have your calendar beer, but on xyz night have just the calendar beer. drink
