Well done...sore on the bum. I'm still crosdfitting and did a new pb for my irish 100m record. Cant be bothered with any rowing now. Might start biking.

I've slowed down on the rower now. My back isn't so sore now so running on the treadmill is easier; just doing ten minutes a day now or 2km (which I row so slow, its normally the same thing!).

Surprisingly not anything like as bad as I was expecting. Legs are a little lacking in energy, but no real aches or pains. Did a cross trainer and arms session this morning.

Last June I did an 18k at 2m12 pace, and now I'm doing further at a faster pace. It has definitely helped the cycling - was out on Tuesday evening, and hills that ordinarily would have been a tad awkward felt easier than expected.

I'm now wondering if doing the full marathon distance next wednesday is a good idea or not .... it'll get me close to my first million.

Unfortunately I've not rowed for about 6 weeks. Didn't renew my gym membership as we want to move and our house is on the market. So seemed a good idea - now the house sale is dragging and I am getting restless not having a gym or rower to keep active.

Once we move I'll consider buying a concept from eBay or joining a local gym. Really miss the tangible performance and stats on the rower , you can't simulate that with a walk or a cycle or doing weights at home.

Don't know how I'd cope without any form of regular cardio ...

Although this week has been a tad ott. Average pace 10k row, 14 mile bike ride (outdoors, the real thing), half marathon row and yesterday I did a morning weights/cardio session with a 10k row at lunch ... and put in a personal best time (just over 41mins). Then a bike ride in the evening.

And today ... my legs are absolutely shot. But there is something that seems to have "snapped" in me - in a good way. I feel like I've really found some improvement and can push myself harder than ever. Heck, the tail end of the last 10k row I had my HR up to 188bpm. Highest that I have ever seen.

Thought I would give this a bash yesterday - was in the gym and the missus didn't fancy joining me (and she was my lift), so only had an hour. 15 minutes warming up on the treadmill then went for it - 7.27 - happy enough, had a bit left in the tank afterwards though. Wish I hadn't tried - can see this becoming addictive smile

Saw a chap next to me start going for it when on the rower, thought I'd match his pace.. Ended up doing a 8m:45s for 2,000m. Pretty tired after that but had already done 5,000m at a leisurely pace.

I start every session at the gym with 20 miles on the bike (1 hr) so I'm not sure if I just went for a row, maybe after a rest day I'd get it a bit quicker. Certainly helped matching the guy next to me, who looked far fitter than I do.

I've been surprised how much technique can improve times. I started off rowing at a rate of 28/29 and times were gradually improving, but after watching a few online videos and chatting to a couple of better rowers I'm now doing quicker times but using a much slower rate of 23/24 but longer power powerful strokes - managed a 20.15 for 5k at the weekend - no world record but steady improvements from the 22m+ I was getting a few months back.

Having not touched a rowing machine in years, last night my legs and back were too mashed from a hilly run on monday to join in the main PT session, so I ducked into the gym. Hmm says I, I wonder how I'm doing..

7 mins 28. Not bad for me smile

It is very, very addictive. With training your times will tumble.

I'm now close to my first million, so have been focusing on distance work. But have been starting back on some sprint challenges.

Last friday tried some 500m intervals. 4 of them, felt terrible.

Monday .... should have been doing a 12x500m (1min rest). Actually did 14x500m. 7km at what would have once been my 2k pace.

Tuesday ... started with a gentle 10km (43mins, kept heart rate to 140bpm or less). Some cross trainer, then in a moment of madness had my first attempt at tabata.

Tabata on the erg is officially evil (if you've just done a 10k). I didn't complete it, just did 3 intervals. After the first I was seeing stars. After the second felt like I was going blind. So ended it after the third.

Can't wait until I can next give the 500m, 2k and 5k a go. Must be able to set PBs on all 3 now. Especially the 5k, I've never really given that a proper go on fresh legs.

Its all about personal bests smile

With having focused on distance work, I seem to have got into a habit of slow/strong - typically 20spm. But this week I've been trying to get back into the habit of higher stroke rates.

Did a 1k in 3m27 last week (personal best by a fair margin), and put in 29spm.

But in the next couple of weeks there's going to be another half marathon attempt .... another one of the concept2 challenges smile

Absolutely.

Mine are currently ...
2k under 7mins
5k under 19
10k under 40

Bloody hard work, but reckon I'm pretty much there - physically. On the day its as much about mental preparation as anything else.

Tried the 2000m challenge on Tuesday night. I've only been gyming to for 3 weeks now, and not really spent much time on the rower.

It took 9mins 42second for 2000m. That was on level 6, which I only realised afterwards frown

I'm assuming you guys are all on a low level to be able to do 7-7:30 mins? I started off pretty well and kept my s/r at around 37/38, but faded after the first 1000m.

Definately something I'm gonna work on though.

Please read the MacGee guide and this thread in general - the 'level' is a preference to your ability/physique/technique.

Great times! Hopefully you're younger and fitter than me so I have an excuse wink

My target for the summer is to get to 19.30 for 5k..........PB of 20.15 so that's quite an ask!

Well yeah, I was trying to hammer it as best I can. I guess I'm doing something wrong though as that sort of stroke rate I should surely be a bit quicker? I can remember the 500m estimate being around 2:24 for the first 4 or 5 mins, after that, and as I'm beginning to feel it, I stopped staring at the screen.

As I said, I am a newby to this, so any help or tips will be greatly appreciated.

I've got no idea how to take minutes off my time.

BTW, I'm about 5'10, 80kilos, 31yo male.

Also, where do I find the Macgee guide please?

Well I'm no expert by any means but the best lesson i've learnt to improve my times it to drop the stroke rate but make longer more powerful strokes. So I've dropped from 28/29 to 23/24 and manage a steady split of circa 2m 05s and then go harder in the final 500m/1km if i've got juice left in the tank to try and beat my PB. Also there are some good vids here - http://concept2.co.uk/training/technique

I'm 95kg, 6', 43 years and still a smoker ....

Not that big an ask, you'd be surprised; a year back I couldn't get close to 20 minutes, and for a month I seemed to be flatlining at 20m00.1 (!!!!). But yesterday I put in a 19m33.5 on what were very knackered legs.

The training I did on the run up to the EIRC did wonders for my overall speed. Also sensible warm ups, mental preparation and getting the pace right - you'll definitely get there.

Next week I'm only planning a half-baked assault on the 10k and a full blown assault on the 2k - those two distances will get me up to my first million on the c2 logbook smile
