Woo hoo. I never thought I'd be so happy to find out I'm firing blanks, but got my letter today. I'm looking forward to tonight.

I had mine done the weekend before starting a new job about 4.5yrs ago, so not the best timing.

It was an unpleasant experience, but probably on a par with tooth removal, if not slightly more embarrassing.

The prospect of an unwanted 3rd child far outweighed my own personal fear and short term discomfort.

I would recommend it for the peace of mind that you aren't going to get an unexpected surprise that you have for the rest of your life.

You do know that you have to fire a few off before they become blank, don't you?

Or have you had the test and been told you are infertile?

I had it done end of Jan. Got my letter today saying I'm now clear.

I wonder if anyone else prefers sex wearing a condom. Since having the snip.my wife says she finds sex much more enjoyable, but i feel sure the whole experience was marginally better. There's something about having your partner rolling on your condom for you that adds to the event.

That said I'm still glad that i had it done despite the fact that my balls are much bigger now.

Got my official letter a few weeks back. Great feeling although with Mrs Toon just having an operation herself, I've not really had much opportunity to use my new found freedom!

Pondering doing it here. 40, single, no kids, don't want any (never have) and never date anyone who does. I'm thinking it would remove any worry about failures on either side, and is probably something I should have done years ago really.

Does the NHS tend to use a certain procedure these days, or does it just vary by the preferences of the doctors? Is it worth paying private to get the keyhole method if I couldn't get that on the NHS here?

Pretty much the same operation private or NHS I think. Mine was trouble free and not especially unpleasant, I did however get and infection on one of the incisions leading to some alarming if not impressive swelling .

No big deal at all and not as bad as an root canal or tooth extraction ime

Interesting thread. Think I'll be having it done next year. No kids but no plans for any, wife agrees, in fact she's more against the idea of kids than I am. She's tried pretty much every pill/injection/fanny-harpoon there is but the hormones really mess her up. Decided a couple of years ago that it's up to me now.

Unfortunately for men we've got either jolly bags or the snip and nowt else. I was looking into something called Vasalgel which looked really promising but it's not going to be on the market for years, if at all.

Snip is easy, like really easy.

But be sure it's what you need. Especially with no kids.

I was 25 when I got mine, but was sure I wanted no more and had to justify that to the clinic doing the Op

For all those thinking of getting it done. First make sure it's definitely what you want. The younger you are and if you have no kids, the consultant will need some convincing as you may well change your mind in the future.

The whole process of booking the surgery is a little uncomfortable and there are forms and consultations which take place first. Once that's out the way you will worry. It's natural. The consultant will fill you with horror stories of what could happen (to cover their backsides basically) and that will make you fear the worst.

OK now that's out the way, the truth is that the operation itself is not as bad as you think it will be in your mind. It's uncomfortable and weird but it's not torture. Once it is done you will be in some discomfort and have to take it easy for a while. Follow all the Dr's advice and a couple of weeks later, you're back to normal and you'll be glad you did it. It's a great feeling to know that when you're in the moment, you don't need to worry about sticking a condom on or waking up after a drunken night and worrying about after morning pills and so on.

(Of course if you're having sex with a stranger, I'd still recommend protection but for an old git like me with a partner who doesn't allow me to play away, I don't have to think about that!)

It's odd, I have no problem waking up every day and deciding not to have kids, I'm married, settled and my wife and I aren't going to change our minds. Even if we did we'd probably adopt anyway for reasons I won't go into here. Though I do think I'll be sad that it's no longer theoretically an option. I'm tempted to freeze a bit to take the edge off.

It can be reversed, you dont stop making them you just cant fire them so its always an option

Potentially, but it's better to consider it irreversible when it comes to making a decision.

Getting it done is a lot more successful than getting it undone.

Consider it permanent.

Yup, I looked into it and reversal I think has something like a 20% success rate, is a much bigger op and you’ll never get it done on the NHS so you’re also looking at a decent amount of cash.
I briefly considered it but for a variety of reasons I have knocked any thought of a reversal on the head.

TL:DR - if you’re not 100% sure, don’t do it.
