I'm unconvinced that 5x5 is accurately described as a solid hypertrophy program.
It's a bit of both. In the real world all resistance training provides strength and hypertrophy to some degree. 5x5 is down the middle, good amount of both. Enough volume for hypertrophy, enough load for strength gains. Just had a thought... It would be cool to run a cars, coffee and curls meet at the gym. Early morning meet up, have a coffee and a chat, good drive out, come back and hit a training session, all home for Sunday afternoon. Proper chat in person rather than typing on the internet is always better for a decent discussion! And if things get heated there are dumbbells to throw at each other.
Although I doubt there's enough people local who like cars and training enough
Add in croissant for more alliteration and some tasty carbs

I'd be up for a meet - so much advanced knowledge and experience in this group; it'd be amazing to train alongside some of you.
Unfortunately, I think we are probably one of the most geographically spread PH 'special interest' groups there is!
Yeah it would be tough!Unfortunately, I think we are probably one of the most geographically spread PH 'special interest' groups there is!
As for hypertrophy with 5x5. It's going to depend on a bummer of factors. Take a newbie lifter with an affinity for muscle growth. He will grow on 5x5. Take a seasoned lifter who does not out muscle on easily, he is less likely too.
5x5 is definitely enough stimulus to promote growth, but it won't work for everyone.

Obviously my example is just the bench part of a larger training program.

But hey, what do I know!
Well it's your profession, after all. Mine as well, as it happens. My MSC is exercise and sport science, I think yours is more strength and conditioning? Apologies if I have that incorrect. Was previously on 5x5 but I was close to my strength limit and wasn't recovering well, I'm 50.
Moved to a Legs, Push, Pull, 3 day split a couple of weeks ago, with slightly lighter weight, 4x8, feeling much better - almost back to the same weight on most of the core lifts, and easily PBd my deadlift, doing other good lifts with at least an accessory lift at the end, feeling far more rested, and able to work harder. Also my tendons are really thanking me too.
Funny how it works out when you chuck in a change.

I recall you were building your client list. How's it going?
Opened my own gym a couple of years ago, going really well. Training everyone from gen pop, to club level athletes, to some relatively elite guys and girls. Everything from rowers training to row the Atlantic, to powerlifters. I recall you were building your client list. How's it going?
